Freshman Program

Current fields of study that work closely with the Freshman Institute.

Study Focuses
In the Freshman year 2012/2013 you have a choice of four fields of study (majors):

    •    T = technical focus for engineering programs
    •    W = business focus for business programs
    •    G = to study the German language as a foreign language
    •    M = human medicine, dentistry, biological sciences and veterinary medicine 

Languages of the Fields of Study
Depending upon your chosen study focus (T, W, G or M), your language options in the Freshman year may be

    •    in bilingual English/German (study focus T - knowledge of German not required for admission)
    •    in German (study focus T, W, G or M)
    •    in English (study focus T or W)

There are currently 5 accredited universities associated with the Freshman program.

    •    FH Aachen (AC)
    •    FH Bielefeld (Bi)
    •    Universität Duisburg-Essen (DuE)
    •    Hochschule Rhein-Waal (RW)
    •    FH Südwestfalen (SW).

In addition there are several other universities that accept students from the Freshman program.  Some programs have a limited number of available spaces (nc), so we cannot guarantee a specific university.  However, the Freshman Institute guarantees that everyone who successfully completes the Freshman program will be able to study at a university in the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia.

Fields of Study taught in English and German: Technical focus

Bachelor's in German.
English language level for the entrance exam must be at least B1.

    •    Applied Chemistry (AC)
    •    Biomedical Engineering (AC)
    •    Civil Engineering (AC) - planned
    •    Electrical Engineering (AC)
    •    Mechanical Engineering (AC)
    •    Physical Engineering (AC)

First year of Bachelor's in English, second and third year of Bachelor's in German.
Language of the Entrance Exam: English

    •    Automation and Control Engineering (DuE)
    •    Computer Engineering (DuE)
    •    Computer Science and Communications Engineering (DuE)
    •    Computational Mechanics (DuE)
    •    Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DuE)
    •    Mechanical Engineering (DuE)
    •    Metallurgy and Metal Forming (DuE)

 

Fields of Study taught in German: Technical focus

 German language level for the entrance exam must be at least B1+.

    •    Nach erfolgreichem Abschluss des Freshman Programms ist es den Studienanwärtern möglich, sich an jeder Hochschule in Nordrhein-Westfalen zu bewerben. Eine Studienplatz-Garantie ist dabei nicht gewährleistet.

Fields of Study taught in German: Business focus

 German language level for the entrance exam must be at least B1+.

    •    Nach erfolgreichem Abschluss des Freshman Programms ist es den Studienanwärtern möglich, sich an jeder Hochschule in Nordrhein-Westfalen zu bewerben. Eine Studienplatz-Garantie ist dabei nicht gewährleistet.
