Learning German

Proof of German language ability is required of ALL international applicants for the IOS Bachelor's programs except those with a German Abitur or Fachhochschulereife.

  • All international students in the IOS Bachelor's programs must demonstrate their German language ability with a notarized German Certificate examination (Zertifikat Deutsch) score of 75% or recognized equivalent.
  • The German language examination DSH 1 is required by the beginning of the third semester for all IOS Bachelor's students.  Details about this examination will be available upon your arrival in Jülich.
  • If you do not pass this exam, you can remain enrolled at the university and continue to learn German.  You can take any exams you are still missing from the first and second semesters, however, you will not be permitted to take any lab courses or exams in the third and higher semesters until you have passed the DSH exam.

Master's students do NOT need to demonstrate proof of German language ability for admisison, however, international students must demonstrate proof of German language ability in the form of the langauge exam "Zertifikat Deutsch" by the third semester.

  • All international students in the Master's programs in Biomedical Engineering, Energy Systems and Nuclear Applications must demonstrate their German language ability with a notarized German Certificate examination (Zertifikat Deutsch = ZD) or recognized equivalent by the third semester.  This is a B1 level exam. There is no minimum score requirement, just the Zertifikat Deutsch itself.
  • If you do not pass this exam, you can remain enrolled at the university and continue to learn German.  You can take any exams you are still missing from the first and second semesters, however you will not be permitted to take any exams in the third and higher semesters until you have passed the ZD exam.

We strongly advise students to join the courses given especially for FH Aachen students in Jülich by the Language Center of the FH Aachen, as they are tailored to the student’s schedules.

  • Upon arrival in Jülich a German teacher will evaluate your previous knowledge of German in a placement test and place you in an appropriate class.
  • If it later becomes apparent that a student has been placed in a group at the wrong level, it is possible to change with the agreement of the teacher.
  • German classes will be offered during the first and second semesters, as well as during the February break, to help you reach your goal.
  • Our German classes are taught by our partner institution the Sprachenzentrum www.FH-aachen.de/hochschule/sprachenzentrum.
  • The fee for the German lessons is about € 350 per semester, including books.  Our German lessons generally total 10 hours a week during the semester and will prepare you for the required certificate examination.
  • Although you will receive all material when you enroll in the German lessons, if you want to study ahead of time you can use any introductory German language book.

Goals of the German Language Courses

The goals of the German courses are

  1. to teach the students normal conversational German, and
  2. to prepare them for the required German language exam.

In order to achieve this goal, each student is expected to attend at least 450 hours of German lessons. For this reason, it is important that students begin immediately with their German lessons.
