The Degree Programme

Overview

The Internationally Oriented Studies programme at FH Aachen, Jülich Campus, specialises in teaching students technical abilities and skills as well as soft skills. All modules emphasise that

  • professional expertise means more than theoretical knowledge: application of professional knowledge is crucial
  • priorities include technical and professional expertise based on mathematics, natural sciences and technical skills
  • soft skills, including social competence and the ability to work in a team, are equally necessary for the students' future employment.

An emphasis is placed on learning the practical manual skills in our modern laboratories, thus building a good basis for your later professional needs.  In higher semesters students work in small groups in professionally-oriented projects where they must plan the project, work together to meet a common goal, and finally present their results in a written report and oral presentation.

The Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering is a modern, flexible programme with an emphasis on teaching professional competence and a methodical approach. Through intensive research in individual areas of expertise, FH Aachen is able to offer students a programme at the cutting edge of science and engineering.

During the first four semesters students gain the tools to become engineers as they learn the mathematical and scientific basics of Biomedical Engineering. In the fourth semester the focus begins on biosystems technology, cardiotechnolgy and medical physics.

In the fifth semester students select a field of specialisation from several areas of specialisation: biophysics, biomechanics, biosensor technolgy, cardiotechnology, medical physics, and medical processing technology.

The first half of the sixth semester is devoted to a practical subject. The Bachelor thesis is the completion of your studies.  Graduates may find employment or continue their studies in a Master's degree programme.

Career Prospects

The task of the engineers in the Bachelor of
Biomedical Engineering programme is to transfer knowledge from
science and research into economically viable technical concepts.
Successfully completing this programme opens doors to promising
careers in the following areas:

  • research and development
  • medical equipment technology and product development
  • biomedical applications
  • production and application technology
  • quality control
  • customer service and technical support
  • service and consulting.

Due to interdisciplinary training, graduates in biomedical engineering
will always be in demand where physics, chemistry,
biology and engineering meet. Career opportunities typically lie
in the fields of

  • medical physics
  • image processing
  • cardiotechnology
  • biosensor technology
  • prosthetics
  • biophysics
  • biomechanics.
