Brief Overview of the Degree Programme

In comparison to the Master's degree in Biotechnology at many other universities, we offer you

  • intensive individual supervision during studies and final thesis
  • a course of study including the state-recognised further training courses in accordance with §§ 15 and 17 GenTSV for the acquisition of expertise as a project manager or as an Officer for Biological Safety (BBS, Beauftragter für die Biologische Sicherheit)
  • the acquisition of practically relevant skills, writing an application for third-party funding, writing a publication, practising English-speaking lectures and active involvement in scientific discussion groups
  • alternative forms of examination throughout the semester (e.g. in the form of presentations, participation in discussions, few written examinations)
  • the opportunity to complete a practical semester before the Master's thesis in order to gain practical experience
  • a free choice of the location of the final thesis, which can be either within the university, within the framework of in-house industry cooperations with renowned companies from the biotech sector or at the Institute of Biotechnology (INB), or outside the university, e.g. in industry or at Forschungszentrum Jülich (very high practical relevance, establishing contacts)
  • a new field of bioeconomy, which introduces you to the concepts of biorefinery technology and consolidated bioprocesses in theory and practice. It provides an overview of the current status and ongoing problems of value creation with a focus on biotechnological processing options
