Why should I study at an FH/UAS?

Information, Rumor Mill and FAQ

Career Prospects

Fachhochschule/University of Applied Sciences

  • Experience shows that many FH/UAS graduates have
an employment contract even before they have defended their Bachelor thesis.
  • The practical semesters and bachelor theses often result in the first employment contract.
  • Due to their application-oriented way of thinking, FH/UAS graduates are very much involved in the optimization, implementation and execution of projects as well as development and construction.

University

  • In top management there are actually more university graduates than FH graduates with doctorates.
  • Large management consultancies partly (still) prefer university graduates.
  • In science and research are rather university
    graduates encountered.

Salaries

Salaries

Fachhochschule/University of Applied Sciences

  • Without a doctorate, there is often no place in the field of upper management. Accordingly, there are more university graduates in the top salary bracket. Master and doctoral degrees can, however, also be obtained seamlessly at the FH Aachen.
  • In most cases, however, graduates of a university of applied sciences start with higher starting salaries because companies can deploy them more quickly and in a more targeted manner.

University

  • Many go the full way from bachelor to master at the university and soon also do their doctorate. But watch out: Places in management and leadership are limited and not for everyone. In the meantime, there are more and more highly-qualified graduates who cannot find a job because they are "overqualified".
  • What is important are additional qualifications that you learn during your studies and working life.

Duration and Course of Studies

Fachhochschule/University of Applied Sciences

  • A Bachelor's degree at the FH/UAS gives a strong introduction to the professional world, especially in the second half, so that many of them start their professional life after 3-4 years.
  • The timetable is more strongly prescribed at the FH Aachen. Most lectures are supplemented by exercises and laboratory practicals, where the knowledge gained is applied in small groups of maximum 40 people.
  • There are no mass events. Similar to the Upper School, there are some courses that are attended by all students together, but most are held in class-like groups.
  • One knows his professors and lecturers, the basic mood has a more personal touch.

University

  • The timetable or semester plan at a university can often be designed more freely and personally, despite some compulsory modules.
  • The opportunities to work in other fields are more prominent and common at universities.
  • Particularly at the beginning, much-selected courses of study lead to overcrowded lecture halls, limited event locations and little personal attention.

Principle of Studies

Fachhochschule/University of Applied Sciences

  • At universities of applied sciences, state-of-the-art theory is always combined with practical application.
  • At FB6, laboratory practicals take place during the entire course of studies to learn practical skills, which are later deepened in practical work, often in cooperation with companies.
  • Participation in student and research projects is strongly encouraged.
  • For this purpose, the department has its own airplanes, (racing) vehicles, a ground station for satellite communication and has various project partners to enable students to gain experience at an early stage.
  • Problem solving and implementation of ideas are in the foreground. FH/UAS graduates have the skills to understand, combine and implement scientific or technical concepts and to use the current state of the art as a tool.

University

  • Universities convey the most up-to-date and usually also the most in-depth theory in their fields.
  • There are many practical courses (e.g. work/exercises in laboratories, student projects), but they are not necessarily part of the main curriculum.
  • Universities have a lot of material, but this can often only be made available to a few, and then only as part of their later work.
  • Research, deep understanding and scientific concepts are emphasized. University graduates oftentimes possess the latest and broadest knowledge which they can then use to find new basic ideas, solve scientific problems and deepen our understanding of nature, technology and mankind.

Research and Development

Fachhochschule/University of Applied Sciences

  • The FH Aachen is one of the strongest research UASs in Germany with a third-party funding volume of 22.8 million Euros. We work closely with national and international research institutes, authorities and companies.
  • Specifically, it is about solutions for current problems in aviation, aerospace and automotive engineering. You can find more under our Branch Research and Projects.
  • In general, UASs work a lot in research, development and construction; both in their own projects and as part of larger projects.

University

  • Due to their size and number of projects, universities often have fundamentally more funds available. However, universities and universities of applied sciences must be equally proficient in teaching and research.
  • There, the projects are also run in-house or in cooperation. Also together with other universities and colleges: For example, there are various joint projects in which various institutes of the RWTH Aachen cooperate very successfully with departments of the FH Aachen.

Opportunities during Studies

Semester Abroad

Semester Abroad

  • At the FH Aachen you can currently choose between 58 partner universities abroad.
  • For example, the Department of Aerospace Engineering cooperates with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia.
  • In the 6th semester, you can choose between an internship semester (at home or abroad) or a semester abroad with studies there, as well as writing your Bachelor's thesis abroad.

Change of University

Change of University

Your decision can't be reversed for the beginning, BUT:

  • Since the introduction of Bachelor's and Master's degrees, switching between UASs and universities has become easier.
  • You may have to catch up on modules, but often you can still get some recognition and do not start from scratch. This applies when changing from university to an university of applied sciences and vice versa.
  • The student advisory service of the Studierendenwerke is well prepared for such cases and can help with orientation.

Doctorate

Doctorate

Yes, you can't do a doctorate at an UAS alone, BUT:

  • After graduating from an UAS, you can transfer to a university for your doctorate.
  • At the FH Aachen a cooperation partner (e.g. the RWTH) is often found for graduates who intend to do a doctorate, so that one continues to work at the FH and is supervised from "outside".
  • Many graduates do their doctorate some time later as part of their work and then look for individually suitable supervisors.
  • More than a dozen students are currently doing their doctorates at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of the FH Aachen. That is more than a quarter of all current doctorates at the FH Aachen.

Studying at a university of applied sciences in no way blocks the possibility of a doctorate!

No Prospect yet?

Unsure whether RWTH or FH Aachen? You can't imagine anything concrete yet under "University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule)" and "University (Universtität)"?

The Zeroth Semester gives you one semester to try out both models.
