Buddy Programme

Each semester about 50 students from all over the world come to study to the Faculty of Business Studies at FH Aachen. To help them to better adjust to a new surrounding, senior semester students support them as buddies. The goal is an intensive exchange of culture, language and international experience between international and local students.

What does a buddy do?

As a buddy you take care of international students and support them in administrative, bureaucratic but also in social matters. Since you're certainly the first (private) contact for your incoming buddy in Aachen, they are going to overwhelm you with questions. The International Faculty Office will help you out if you cannot answer all the questions that might come up.

An overview of your tasks :

> First contacting by email
> Welcome on arrival
> Assistance in important formalities, e.g. registration, appartment hand-overs,
opening a bank account, health insurance, mobile phone contract etc.
> Support in everyday life and everyday university life
> Organisation of joint activites in your spare time

What is the buddy programme good for?

As a buddy at the Faculty of Business Studies at FH Aachen you make contacts to international students and so gain insight into other cultures. At the same time, you make settling into Aachen easier for international students. At the end of your buddy activities we will hand you a certificate of participation about social commitment. Besides the development of social competencies, you can also improve your foreign language skills.

What requirements does a buddy have to meet?

There is no special prior knowledge required. You should be receptive, open-minded and curious towards people of other cultures. Foreign language skills, especially English are required as many incoming students speak only little or no German. At best, you have already spent a semester abroad or are planning a stay abroad in the future. What is more, we assume that you're reliable and also have time to take care of your incoming buddies.

Who decides to take part in the buddy programme, agrees to attend a kick-off event before the beginning of the semester (February/July) as well as a feeback round during the semester. Participation is obligatory.

How do I become a buddy?

Please send us your CV and a motivation letter by email (ifo(at)fh-aachen.de) revealing why we should choose you as a buddy. You will be informed by your alumni e-mail adress as soon as new buddies are sought after again.
