When is the ideal point in time for a semester abroad?

The ideal point in time for a semester abroad in undergraduate studies is the fifth regular semester because you get to choose from a a great number of modules here. Generally, it is also possible to study a semester abroad in the fourth regular semester.

Please keep in mind the attaining prerequisites and registration periods  for your application. Should you not have met all the prerequisites by the end of the deadline (for applications within Europe only) you can apply anyway. The commitee for the semester abroad may admit you then "with reservations". 

Please note that the choice of partner universities is significantly smaller in the summer than in the winter semester.

How do I learn whether my semester abroad has been admitted and at which partner university my place of study will be?

The commitee for the semester abroad decides on the award of places of study. As a rule, we have enough places for all applicants, but not necessarily for the desired university or desired country. Nonetheless, we try to take into account your preferences as best as we can. You receive an email about two weeks after the end of the deadline.

Yes, it is important for us that you can benefit from the experience of your fellow students. In the testimonails you receive tips about the choice of courses or how to look for a flat and learn how the support at the university is assessed by your fellow students and what tourist attractions are recommandable.

What about the semester times abroad?

Depending on the country, the partner universities have different semester times, which may vary especially at universities outside Europe. It is therefore possible that certain partner university are not accesssible in the summer semester or that examination periods at the FH Aachen cannot be kept, if e.g. the semester abroad begins in January.

Here, you fnd a rough overview of the international semester times (no guarantee). To be sure, it is recommended that you check the semester times  ("academic calender")  on the web sites of each partner university.

When you get the admission for a place of study at a foreign university, it has yet to be clarified before the start of the semester abroad (ca. 1-2 months before) what exams from abroad can be recognised. You are there asked to draw up a list of selectable modules taking into consideration of the content and the attaining ECTS credit points (Form course selection). As a rule, your partner universitiy will publish an overview of all courses it offers. Some universities provide a list of choosable modules. On top of that, you can learn from the testimonials what courses your fellow students who already spent a semester abroad chose at the particular unviersity.

How does the recognition of courses work that were attended abroad?

Before you start your semester abroad, the recognition of modules has to be prepared. You are therefore asked to draw up a list of choosable modules taking into account the content and credit points  (Form course selectionl). After it has been checked by the International Faculty Office an agreement, a so called  "Learning Agreement“ or „Recognition Sheet“ is prepared between the student and FH Aachen and the partner university, listing all the modules that are going to be recognised and the corresponding modules at FH Aachen.

After you return from abroad, the certificate from the partner university is checked against the Learning Agreement/ Recognition Sheet, signed and the courses are recognised correspondingly.

Is it possible to get a refund for the semester ticket during the semester abroad?

Is it possible to get a refund for the semester ticket during the semester abroad?

Yes, you can apply for a refund of the  cost for the semester ticket at Asta. You won't need the certificate for the exemption from the contribution to the semester ticket as  IFO  regularly passes on the names of students going abroad to the Asta.

Can I take a leave of absence during my semester abroad?

Can I take a leave of absence during my semester abroad?

No, that is not possible because you are going to take exams abroad that will be recognised towards your studies at FH Aachen.

First, you need a proof of language skills of the language of education at level B2 For the FH Aachen. Here, performances from school, vocational school or other language schools are accepted. Depending on the university, a proof of language skills at level C1 is required. You can provide this yet by the end of the application period at the partner university, e.g by passing a test at the Sprachenzentrum der FH Aachen (offered once a month). There, you receive your DAAD language certificate which as a rule is accepted at the partner university.

International Business Management:
The ideal time for a semester abroad in the Master's degree programme International Business Management is the 3rd semester, as this is a compulsory part of your studies according to the study plan. In principle, the semester abroad can also be taken at a later date, but this will extend the duration of your studies.

Please note that the selection of partner universities is much smaller in the summer semester than in the winter semester.

Industrial Engineering:
The ideal time for a semester abroad in the Master's degree programme Industrial Engineering is prior to the completion of the Master's thesis, by taking an additional semester. It is also possible to take a semester abroad as part of the course of study, but since this is not part of the course of study, it is possible that not all courses will be recognized.

Please note that the selection of partner universities is significantly smaller in the summer semester than in the winter semester.

International Business Management:

The application for the semester abroad, which is compulsory in the third semester, is made in the first semester. During the first semester, an information event will introduce the respective partner universities where a stay abroad is possible at the respective time of the semester abroad. Subsequently, students submit a written application to the chairman of the international committee and list three priorities for their stay abroad. The application deadlines will be communicated at the beginning of the Master's degree programme. Usually they are in November for the following winter semester and in June for the following summer semester. A Europass curriculum vitae and a copy of the Bachelor's degree must be enclosed with the application.

Which courses can I choose abroad?

On top of that, you can learn from the testimonials what courses your fellow students who already spent a semester abroad chose at the particular unviersity.

If you are a student of the degree programme International Business Management and have a choice, you can basically choose all courses that are thematically related to the International Business Management programme and/or to your respective subject area (KuS or FACT). You should avoid overlapping or duplication of courses.

Students of the degree programme Industrial Engineering can choose all business courses that are to be integrated into the course of study. The courses that are thematically assigned to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics must be clarified in consultation with the respective professors.

How much costs a semester abroad?

The costs for the semester abroad depend on the respective country and the university you choose. In Europe, you will usually get a free place through Erasmus+, except in the UK, where tuition fees apply. Outside Europe, fees for the semester abroad are more common.

What is the difference between Study Abroad and Exchange?

What is the difference between Study Abroad and Exchange?

If you spend the semester abroad under the Study Abroad Agreement, this means that you have to pay tuition fees, as is the case in Australia, for example. If your exchange takes place as an exchange student, you will receive a free place at a partner university and will not have to pay tuition fees. Can I obtain a double degree?

Can I obtain a double degree?

Yes, students of the Master's degree programme International Business Management can obtain a double master's degree at selected partner universities. This means that you spend two semesters abroad and write your final thesis at the partner university. You will then receive both the degree of the partner university and that of the FH Aachen.
