Industry 4.0 Summer School - CANCELLED

The Industry 4.0 Summer School gives an insight into the objectives and strategies of Industry 4.0, shows the current status of activities, and provides information on how to benefit from the ideas linked to Industrie 4.0 today. In addition to a theoretical introduction to Industry 4.0, the main technologies and processes for the implementation of Industrie 4.0 will be introduced and then addressed in greater detail in a workshop. The aim is actually to enable digitalisation. Starting from the process itself, the digitisation of  companies will be introduced and then expanded on using hands-on examples. A model system will be used to demonstrate the technological possibilities.

  • Learn why Industry 4.0 is so important for European industry and what is hidden behind the keyword I4.0.
  • Get to know the development strategy for Industry 4.0 and find out which actions are still to be taken.
  • Learn the keywords related to Industrie 4.0 from Augmented Reality to Cloud, CPS and IoT and on to Smart Factory, value creation chains and XaaS.
  • Look through the entire digital value creation chain from intelligent sensors to cloud services.
  • Understand the technologies that make a machine, system or factory capable for industrial communication.
  • Discover the significance of IT, IT infrastructure and IT security in the context of Industry 4.0 for an automation system.
  • Design your first digitised processes yourself and find out about the effects on a model factory.

Industry 4.0 Summer Session is currently scheduled to take place in two versions:

  • "Standard" Summer School at FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences
  • Online Summer School in which you can participate from home

The Industry 4.0 Summer School Team is actively monitoring the local and global health situation related to COVID-19, also called coronavirus, with the health and well-being of our community firmly in mind. We will keep this page up-to-date as new information is available about the potential impacts of the situation on our program.


Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if no courses can take place at FH Aachen?

If we are not allowed to do any courses at FH Aachen in person, we will offer an online course including all theoretical and practical content. In this case, you will have the choice to participate online with a lower course fee or to get a refund.

Will special considerations be made to the refund policy if a student's travel is affected?

If you cannot join our Summer School due to travel or visa restrictions enacted by your own or the German government, we will refund the participation fee.

I want to apply for a scholarship but I cannot register at the moment as no travel reqests are possible at my university. Can you reserve a scholarship for me?

We can reserve a scholarship for you till end of May. Please apply for the scholarship as soon as possible.

Online Version of the Summer School

Due to the COVID-19 situation we are offering an online version of the Industry 4.0 summer school which includes:

  • Online lectures (streamed and captured) by Prof. Wollert and Prof. Luft
  • Online practical sessions on your own pace with support from our tutors
  • Online factory visit of the German company Igus

The online summer shool content can be accessed 24 hours a day, so you can study independently from all locations and without problems regarding time differences. 

Requirements and Scholarships


  • The participants should have interest and enthusiasm in new technologies.
  • Programming Skills: Basic knowledge of at least one programming language such as Python or C++ is an advantage.
  • Language Skills: Participants should have a good proficiency in English as the Summer School is held completely in English.
  • Insurance: The Aachen University of Applied Sciences (FH Aachen) requires that the Industry 4.0 Summer School participants have appropriate and valid medical, liability and accident insurance for the duration of the Industry 4.0 Summer School. Please note that the FH Aachen does not cover any of these risks.

Scholarships for travel and accomodation

This summer school is sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in Germany. If you are enrolled as a student in Bachelor, Master or PhD you can apply for a scholarship. Registration, Fees and Summer School Package

Registration Fee - Virtual Participation

External applicants are subject to pay a Industrie 4.0 Summer School registration fee which is 350 Euro and includes online course material, digital factory and city visits. The online summer school package includes:

  • Online Lectures and practical courses,
  • Online Course material,
  • Digital factory visits,
  • Digital course certificate (optional: printed certificate & summer school t-shirt by mail).

Registration Fee - On-site Participation

External applicants are subject to pay a Industrie 4.0 Summer School registration fee which is 750 Euro. The summer school package includes:

  • Lectures and practical courses,
  • Course material,
  • Summer School handbook with all necessary information about the FH Aachen and travelling in Germany,
  • Beverages at the FH Aachen during the courses,
  • Excursions and social events,
  • Course certificate, summer school bag, summer school t-shirt.

Participation of students from the FH Aachen

Students from the FH Aachen can participate in the summer school for free as part of the lecture "Einführung Industrie 4.0".

Our Summer School package includes the course fee, beverages and leisure activities as shown in the schedule. Depending on your personal interests, you will get a great variety of options for your stay in Aachen and Germany. Course Credit, I4.0 Certificate and Transcript

A participation certificate is issued for all I4.0 Summer School students and handed out at the end of the summer school. The certificate lists the topics and the duration of the Summer School. The course credit does not apply for internal I4.0 students (i.e. FH Aachen students, who take part in this course over a longer time period and receive therefore 5 ECTS).

All I4.0 participants have the option to take the final written exam. Those, who write the exam, will get a I4.0 transcript with a grade for their test Performance and the course credit (4 ECTS credits). The grading scheme is as follows:

from 1.0 to 1.5    =  very good
from 1.6 to 2.5    =  good
from 2.6 to 3.5    =  satisfactory
from 3.6 to 4.0    =  sufficient
above 4.0            =  failed
