Addresses

Please see Contacts

Change of Address and Password

Students can personally change their address only via "QIS" (the online examination office). Your official FH University e-mail-address will automatically be your default address, a second e-mail-address can be added or changed via "QIS".

Adding a second or home-address is however only possible via the "Services" page.

You can look at your user data in the Catalogue PLUS and, if needed, change your password there.

External library users should inform the library staff at the circulation desk of changes in postal address or e-mail address. We strongly recommend using the official university e-mail-address as default, because some providers (i.e. GMAIL, GMX, Hotmail) send our reminders and notifications to the SPAM folder.

Brief Information On Your Library

Brief Information On Your Library  - PDF Date 2015-08

Call Number

The call number refers to a media item's location within the library, it is the identification code that helps you find it on the shelves. It is mostly made up of letter-number combinations and can be found in both the online catalogue and on the item itself.

Call Number (Example)

All the library's media are assigned an individual call number which contains a shelf location mark. You find the call number e.g. on the spine.

Example for call number: 21 TWR 143 (6)

21 ------> branch library, here: Eupener Straße

TWR ----> subject group

143 ---> sequential number

(6) -----> edition

The media are first sorted by subject group on the shelves (ascending from AAA to ZZZ), then by serial number. This way, it is ensured that media concerning the same subject are shelved together. You can also make use of this system when looking for additional literature about a certain subject

Online-Catalogue OPAC

The Online-Catalogue OPAC shows the way to our collection. Here you find:

  • books
  • e-books
  • journals
  • DVDs
  • and other media

in short: all media that we offer in our four branch libraries. You find a brief description and hints with regard to location for all approx. 180,000 media listed in the catalogue. The catalogue is updated online, thus new acquisitions are announced promptly.

You do not find articles from journals or books in the Online-Catalogue. Here you have to search for the book or journal the article has been published in.

The Online-Catalogue is often called OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue).
More Information you can find in the YouTube-channel of the library : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR9i5rGxpwE Wie finde ich ein Buch in der Bibliothek (German only).

Change User Data

You can change your user data and your e-mail address.

  1. Start "http://onlinekatalog.bibliothek.fh-aachen.de/webOPACClient/start.do?StartPage=userAccount&Language=en
  2. Log on. You will find your user number on your library card. Your default password: Date of birth (DDMM)
  3. Select "Account" and "User Details"

Classification System

The shelves are arranged per stack units from the left to the right side, and from the top shelf to the bottom. All bookstack units are arranged in the same way.

The shelves are arranged by call numbers, i.e. first by letter-combinations, then by ongoing book-number.

The classification system arranges all topics from general to specific. The library uses the GHBS - classification system of the Gesamthochschulbibliotheken of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Thus it is assured that you will find all literature on a specific topic at the same location in the library.

Cleanliness

Cleanliness is considered "particularly important" in all our polls. More than 90 per cent of our users are satisfied with our cleanliness. Thank you very much! You can help to keep it this way!

Reserve collections

For students
Depending on the course you might find all media that you need for a course or lecture side by side on the same shelf - this is called reserve collection or course reserve. In order to make this literature available for all of you, the media may be either used only in the library, or the circulation is restricted.

For professors and other instructors
the library provides the possibility to establish reserve collections for your lectures and exercises.

  • We can shelve all books and journal articles, scripts, master copies etc. that you recommend as a reserve collection together at one location in the library.
  • Thus you spare your students unnescessary waiting periods for media which has been borrowed by others and can ensure that your recommended literature is at least available and can be read.

If desired we can provide chosen articles from journals and add it to your reserve collection as well. As a special service, we may announce your reserve collection on our homepage.

In case you are interested in this kind of service from the library, please contact your branch library  ( bibliothek(at)fh-aachen.de ) or call us  (please see people).

DIPP Digital Peer Publishing

The Ministry for innovation, science and research of North Rhine-Westphalia has initiated open-access "Digital Peer Publishing NRW". In the scope of this initiative, the development and maintanance of eight electronical scholarly journals is being funded.

"RTejournal. Forum for Rapid Technology" is published by the Aachen University of Applied Sciences and is patronized in the scope of this project.

... from the start page of this project

The initial point.

High-quality scientific information management has many aspects: fast procurement of information, intelligent choice of information, sophisticated ressources are only a few examples.

Most notably, however, high-quality scientific information management implies a future-oriented, high-quality based system of scientific publishing.

It is both prerequisite and promotor of open access to globally available information and efficient exchange in global scientific-networks.

The objective.

We have the objective to both extend the range of high-quality scientific publications and to test new forms of net-based co-operative supply of information and to implement these forms to an extent as far as possible.

They allow a fast, open and transparent digital peer publishing and are perspectively open for the national and the international scientific community.

The eJournals are subject to an open publishing license. Our aim is to have the software used in the scope of the initiative digital peer publishing licensed by Open Source License g-fsl (German Free Software License).

These regulations define for which services fees will be charged, and up to what amount.

11-20 days: 5 Euro per item
21-30 days: 10 Euro per item

from the 41st day: 20 Euro + 25 Euro charge + Cost of replacement.

Please always observe the due date stated on your loan receipt! Fees will be charged if items are overdue - irrespective of a reminder.

GHBS Classification System

The media in the four branch libraries are shelved by subject classification.

This classification system enables you to find literature on one specific topic in one location or in the online catalogue.

The classification system arranges all subject fields from general to specific. We use the GHBS-shelf classification of the libraries of the comprehensive universities in North Rhine-Westphalia. Detailed information has been provided by the hbz (Hochschulbibliothekszentrum).  GHBS - Aufstellungssystematik der Gesamthochschulbibliotheken des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen

Extended Loan Period for Graduates

In order to avoid being deprived of essential literature during the period of writing your thesis, we offer you an extended loan period (usually for three months). Please provide a certificate indicating the period of your processing time. By way of exception, books which were borrowed with this special loan period can be renewed at the circulation desk. Online renewal is not possible. Please phone us or come by personally.

Please note: Books from the interlibrary loan are excluded from this special loan period for graduates, although a renewal should normally be possible. Please enquire about this.

Guided Tours

We regularly offer guided tours through your branch library - for fresher groups or on request.

We would like to ask all tutors to inform us about their target dates in due time. mailto:bibliothek(at)fh-aachen.de or in your branch library or via our staff at the information and interlibrary loan desk+49(0)241/6009-2057.

Patent search

Do you have an idea for a product? Are you looking for a product idea? Then you need to look into the ideas others had in that field and search for similar inventions.

For the first search, we recommend two freely accessible databases, which can be found in the Digital Library “DigiBib” in the list of databases in the category > Standards, patents, regulations:

Detailed information on the disclosure of inventions and the patent strategy of the FH Aachen are available at the websites of the Innovation transfer (IVT) of the FH Aachen.Aachen

Personal and laboratory reserve collection circulation policy

"The personal reserve collection of full time professors, research associates and teachers for special tasks can include up to 100 media. A time limit of loan period does not apply."

The loan period shall be shown as 31.12.9999, (in accordance with § 11 Verwaltungs- und Benutzungsordnung)

Regulations of administration and use,
§ 11 Personal reserve collections and laboratory reserve collections

(1) The personal reserve collection of full time professors, research associates and teachers for special tasks and members of the University Council (Hochschulrat) can include up to 100 media. A time limit of loan period with regard to reserve collections does not apply.

(2) The personal reserve collections shall remain right of property of North Rhine-Westphalia and are therefore part of the library and listed in its catalogues.

(3) Media of personal reserve collections of professors, research associates and teachers for special tasks and members ot the University Council (Hochschulrat) have to be at other user's disposal. In case a medium forming part of a reserve collection is requested for borrowing, the respective holder of the reserve collection will be contacted by the library administration in order to return the media within a period of ten days. The media will then be lended to the requestor, the maximum loan period is four weeks. Upon return of the media, the owner of the reserve collection has a four week time limit to re-order the media for his reserve collection. If the holder of the reserve collection fails to return the media within ten days, the clause of § 6 of this regulations apply with regard to the missed deadline.

(4) Standard works, spreadsheet books, reference works etc. that are constantly being needed by the respective holders of the reserve collection are excluded from the above mentioned regulation. In case such medium has been requested by another authorized user, the holder of the reserve collection is obliged to provide the medium for insight within ten days.

(5) Apart from reserve collection, you have the possibility to borrow media into a laboratory collection or a similar facility's media collection. A laboratory collection are media at a special location that has to be accessible to many professors, research associates, teachers for special tasks and students at any time. A personal liability of particular users is not given. For the right of access to the media, the regulations are similar to those cornerning the standard works, spreadsheet books and reference works of personal reserve collections. A laboratory collection can include up to 100 media and has to be registered with the library administration under both a filing name (e.g. Laboratory collection "Construction") and the name of the head of laboratory.

Purchasing Suggestions

.

If you think that something is missing from our library collection, please let us know. You are welcome to make purchasing suggestions regarding the acquisition of  new (text-)books and other media (videos, CD-ROM etc.) [go to the form ].

There are different ways to do this:

  • personally and traditionally - please hand in your purchasing suggestion at one of the branch libraries.
  • electronically, directly from your work place – go to our homepage and fill in the form.

Unless the book is already available or the order is already pending, the required title will be procured in line with our aquisitions policy statement and, if desired, will be reserved for you. If the title is already available, our staff will  contact you and reserve it for you.

Tips for professors and members of staff

Before making an order, please take into consideration whether this title is listed as a study essential in your list of required reading. If so, we will have to obtain multiple copies to be used as course books. We would appreciate you sending us lists of required or recommended reading for your lectures and courses in due time before the beginning of the term. Then we can take care of acquiring these titles in time.

As we don't always have a sufficient number of copies of relevant titles in stock, we would like to offer you the opportunity to compile reserve collections in the library.

Books that are in high demand for either a course or a lecture will be shelved separately under your name and will be excluded from general lending for the duration of the course. Each participant of the course will then have the opportunity to use the literature (to read it and copy parts of it).

What is obtained, what isn't?

The university library exclusively acquires media that is required for teaching, studying, research and development, creative assignments and advanced vocational training of the branches of study represented at the FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences.

In principle, we obtain any information medium. By preference, reference works or databases are acquired as CD-ROMs. These can be used by way of the central CD-ROM network on the entire campus, or by way of dial-up access directly from home.

The library does not acquire:

1. Literature for official purposes of university, faculty or project administration.
2. Teaching materials, software.

3. Instruction manuals, catalogues of goods as well as popular scientific and belletristic literature, unless a certain title is needed for lessons, study or research purposes.

4. Print editions of reference works which are available campus-wide in electronic form.

We will, however, help other university departments and offices acquire afore-mentioned materials, as we get a 5% library discount according to the Fixed Book Price Law.

Reading e-books – a manual for members of the FH Aachen

When you hear the library staff talking about e-books (electronic books), you should be aware that we refer to a variety of formats which are scattered across a handful of sites by different providers, that offer different means of access and require different technical premises.  However, all of them have some important aspects in common:

·         They are bibliographically recorded in the catalogue PLUS.

·         You can use them free of charge and if you are a member of the FH Aachen either on campus or at home or even on-the-go.

Read the manual for the operation system or device you plan to read on and do not hesitate to contact us should difficulties occur:

Reading room

It is in the common interest of all users to keep quiet in all functional rooms of the library, especially in the reading rooms.

In our polls, the constant ringing of mobile phones has often been criticised. Therefore please mute your mobile phone.

Smoking, eating and drinking are not allowed in the library rooms.

Reference Collections

Reference collections are for exclusive use in the library (in-library use). The reference collections contain mostly reference works and loose leaf publications, as well as non-circulation copies of popular textbooks.

You can recognise the reference collections by their red back labels.

In exceptional cases, media from the reference collection can be borrowed for a short period of time. A renewal after the due date is not possible. Please contact our staff during service hours.

Citavi - Reference Management and Knowledge Organisation

The Data Processing Centre (DVZ) has acquired a Campus Licence for the reference management software Citavi.

This is interesting for everyone who works extensively with literature, quotes literature, and writes an academic paper or thesis. In the recently released new version you can also work on projects as a team.

With immediate effect, all students, staff, as well as professors of the FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences can request their personal licence code by visiting the following website:

On the Citavi homepage  www.citavi.com you will find further information and support. Among other things, there is a helpful PowerPoint presentation:

http://www.citavi.com/de/materialien/Citavi_Schulung_PPT2007.pptx

In addition to that, the Citavi homepage provides further excellent support services.

The media are first sorted by subject group on the shelves (ascending from AAA to ZZZ), then by serial number. This way, it is ensured that media concerning the same subject are shelved together. You can also make use of this system when looking for additional literature about a certain subject

Shelving

All titles are shelved on open access. Titles are shelved by classified arrangement of books, i.e., you shall find books regarding the same subject next to each other.

For further details see GHBS  classification system or directly
GHBS - Aufstellungssystematik der Gesamthochschulbibliotheken des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen

Short-term loan

... of reference collection:

The reference collections contain mostly reference works and loose-leaf publications, also quite often non-circulation copies of popular textbooks.

You can recognise the reference collections by the red back labels.

In exceptional cases media of the reference collection can be borrowed shortly. The due date expires without the possibility for renewal. Please contact our staff during the service hours.

... Literature from personal reserve collections and laboratory collections:

Literature that has been lent to personal reserve collections (end of loan period 31.12.9999) can be ordered back for short-term access by another user. Please ask our Staff when you have to deal with this case.

Silence

"You are requested to keep the quiet in all library rooms, especially in the reading rooms. This is in the interest of all users." § 8 (1) Verwaltungs- und Benutzungsordnung.

Our surveys show that the biggest point of criticism is a lack of silence in the reading rooms. Your loudly ringing mobile phone is especially annoying. Therefore: Please help by muting your phone!

Books from the interlibrary loan are excluded from this special loan period for graduates, although a renewal should normally be possible. Please enquire about this at the circulation desk.
