Focus on Energy

The SIJ has been working on innovative, application-oriented developments in the fields of regenerative and efficient energy use in direct cooperation with industry, universities and research institutions for well over 30 years. The activities focus on solar thermal systems, energy storage and hydrogen, efficient building and systems technology as well as intelligent energy supply.

multiTESS building at BrainergyPark Jülich — muliTESS is a multifunctional power-to-heat & power storage system. In times of coal phase-out and volatile energy generation, such storage concepts can make a crucial contribution to the decarbonisation of industry and the energy sector.

Solar Tower Jülich — First-time demonstration of a solar tower power plant developed in Germany with open-volumetric receiver technology and optimisation of the individual power plant components in their interaction as an overall system.

Quirinus Headquarters — In Quirinus, regional producers and consumers are intelligently controlled from a prototypical control centre to ensure the stability and flexibility of the electricity supply at distribution network level as the share of renewable energy increases.

Parabolic trough collector system Cyprus — In the EDITOR project, a parabolic trough collector system with concrete thermal storage was installed in Limassol, Cyprus, to provide controllable process steam for a beverage manufacturer.
