Main Research Focus Digitalisation & Industrial Production

The digitalisation of processes and technical systems is bringing about a radical change in all industrial sectors. The increasing networking and resulting transformation processes hold great potential that requires interdisciplinary cooperation. This makes digitalisation & industrial production one of the central research areas at FH Aachen. Here, topics such as intelligent production, autonomous and cognitive robotics, autonomous driving and flying, additive manufacturing, IT security or microwave and plasma technology are worked on at four institutes operating on an interdisciplinary basis. The faculties of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Business Studies, Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics as well as Medical Engineering and Technomathematics are all participating.

The Institute for Applied Automation and Mechatronics (IaAM) is a service provider and research institution for issues related to digitalisation in mechanical engineering. As a competence centre for the intelligent production of tomorrow, it combines the focal points of autonomous robotics (advanced automation), additive manufacturing processes, innovative jointing technology as well as holistic process management and engineering in the area of production and logistics.

The Institute for Digitalisation Aachen (IDA) covers the entire process of digital transformation from theoretical conceptualisation to practical implementation. The institute focuses on application-oriented research and development in areas such as e-commerce, smart living and Industry 4.0, but also the potential dangers of networked devices and the safety of smart devices.

The Institute for Microwave and Plasma Technology (IMP) has established the two basic technologies GHz plasma technology and mixed-frequency measurement technology and has verified them through various applications. The application focus for microwave technology is in safety technology (sea rescue, mountain rescue, Cat's Eye 2.0, robot protection) and various navigation applications; for microwave plasma technology it is in applications for ignition, lighting, cutting, metal/ceramic 3D printing and welding, in carbon fibre production as well as in many ecological alternatives to big industry rapid heating applications and in volume reduction of radioactive waste.

At the Institute for Mobile Autonomous Systems and Cognitive Robotics (MASCOR), solutions for intelligent autonomous robot systems are developed. Core competences are cognitive robotics, artificial intelligence, knowledge representation and automated reasoning, image processing and visualisation as well as automation technology from computer science and mechanical engineering.
