Bachelor Fields of Study after the Freshman Year

The Freshman program is offered completely in German (German Track), completely in English (English Track), or in our English to German Track, where you can start in English and finish in German. We offer guaranteed admission to some bachelor’s degree programs and universities after the Freshman year, as explained below.

German Track

Options: Engineering, Business/Economics, Medicine

Previous knowledge of German is required.

The recommended German language level requirement for admission to the Freshman program is at least B1 with a mark of 1 or 90% or B2.

German language will be tested as part of the entrance exam and a certificate is not required.

The Freshman year and bachelor's program are taught in German.

Each university determines which course/final exam (Feststellungsprüfung) you need for a particular bachelor's program. Check the website for the university of your choice to see which Freshman course is appropriate for you.

After successful completion of the Freshman program, students may apply to study at any German university, but preferably in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). However, the Freshman Institute cannot guarantee that the student will be admitted to a bachelor’s degree program.

English Track FeP

Feststellungsprüfung (final assessment exam) in English

Options:  Engineering or Business/Economics

Previous knowledge of German is NOT required.

The recommended minimum English language level requirement for admission to the Freshman program is B2 or IELTS 5.5.  English language will be tested as part of the entrance exam and a certificate is not required.

The Freshman year and bachelor's program are taught in English.

The Freshman program you attend depends upon your chosen course and field of study after the Freshman year.

After successful completion of the Freshman program

  • Students interested in the FH Südwestfalen/South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences and SRH University Hamm are guaranteed admission. See details below.
  • Other students may apply to study at any English-language bachelor’s degree program at a university in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). However, the Freshman Institute cannot guarantee that the student will be admitted to a Bachelor’s program.

SRH Hamm

English to German Track

Previous knowledge of German is NOT required.

The Freshman year will be taught in English and German.  German language classes will help the students with the transition from English to German.

The use of English and German as the languages of instruction at university as well as the details of the Freshman program vary depending upon the partner university. You can select your field of study from the partner universities listed below.

After successful completion of the Freshman program, the Freshman Institute guarantees that the student will be admitted to one of the programs listed below.

FH Aachen

Intensive German lessons during the Freshman year prepare students for the transition in the language of instruction from English to German for the Internationally Oriented Studies (IOS) bachelor's programs.  Therefore, we strongly recommend that applicants who have been admitted use the time before they come to Germany to learn German (for example DUO www.deutsch-uni.com).

After successful completion of the Freshman year, students continue their studies in one of the Internationally Oriented Studies (IOS) bachelor's programs (guaranteed admission!).  Consideration is taken for the fact that the students' German level is not yet C1.

FH Aachen

University of Duisburg-Essen

 

German: Previous knowledge of German is not required.

Recommended English level:  B1 with a mark of 1 or B2 or IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL iBT 72.
English language will be tested as part of the entrance exam and a certificate is not required.

The transition in the language of instruction from English to German is during the second year. Therefore, both languages are taught during the Freshman year. 
After successful completion of the Freshman year, students continue their studies in one of the following international Studies in Engineering (ISE) programs, including one year of additional German lessons.

University Duisburg-Essen

Important: Students for the University of Duisburg-Essen must have a “B” average in mathematics over the last 3 years of school, which includes the last two years of high school as well as the Freshman year.  Therefore, we cannot guarantee admission to the University of Duisburg-Essen after the Freshman year.

HBK Essen - University of Fine Arts Essen*
