How does ordering of periodical articles work via interlibrary loan?

Login to "the digital library“
Please login to the digital library with your user number and your account's password. Your user number is the number on your library card. The password corresponds to your password for the use of the online catalogue (the default is the first four digits of your date of birth (DDMM), provided that you have not changed it).

Please search the journal from which you need an article via the entry mask: "journal articles". Please select required journal and click on "order document".

How will I be notified when my interlibrary loan demand has arrived?

As soon as your demand has arrived, you will be notified via email. In case you have not entered an email address in your library account, you will be notified via mail (additional postage fee). You can also inform yourself online about your interlibrary loans via your library account.

Where do I fetch my interlibrary loan demands?

You may fetch your books and copies ordered by interlibrary loan in your branch library.

In general, you can print the essays themselves free of all printing stations at the FH Aachen. Rarely it happens that copies are available at the circulation desk of your chosen branch library.

How long is the loan period?

The loan period will be determined by the respective supplying libraries. As a rule, it is about four to six weeks. Please check your receipt upon lending for the due date and for particular borrowing regulations.

Can due dates for interlibrary loan demands be renewed?

As it is the supplying library that determines the borrowing regulations, this question cannot be answered in general. Please ask the library staff of the FH Aachen before the expiration of the due date. If a renewal is possible, it is made subject to consent of the possessing library! We inform you in case the request for renewal shall be rejected. In this case you are requested to return the literature within ten days.

May I order an electronic copy of a journal article to be delivered via e-mail?

No. Since January 1st 2008 it is not possible anymore.

The recent changes in the German copyright law resolved upon by the German Bundestag and the Bundesrat lead to considerable restrictions in the delivery conditions for libraries participating in the Inter-library loan system since January 1st 2008. As the prerequisites for the delivery of electronic documents are regulated indefinitely only by § 53a UrhG (German copyright law), interlibrary loan libraries have to dispense with electronic delivery for the time being. This means copies of articles ordered via interlibrary loan will be available as print-outs only until further notice.

What do I have to do if I have not found a searched title and would like to order nevertheless?

In case the title you look for is not listed in any of our databases, you may enter the data in a free entry mask that is offered when search was not successful. Please take into account that processing and delivering of such a request might take a bit longer, as this kind of demand has to be reworked conventionally. Please supply as many data as possible, if necessary, please also fill in "miscellaneous".

Which titles cannot be ordered?

  • Literature that is available in your library or in any other public library on the spot.
  • If the literature is locally available and you try to order it nevertheless, you shall be notified by the system that a library on the spot is offering the requested book.
  • Works that can be obtained at the booktrade at a low price. This is due to the fact that processing of interlibrary loan would be more expensive than acquisition of the book. The current price limit is 15,00 €.
  • Works that have a special value, in particular works of the 16 and 17 century. Works that have been published before 1800 have been mostly excluded, too.  However, copies or microfilms may mostly be made.
  • Loose-leaf publications and unbound periodicals.
