Aachener Sprachwinter

Learn German in the European City of Aachen

Every year, the FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences offers winter courses in German as a foreign language, known as the Aachener Sprachwinter. The courses are designed for international students with advanced knowledge of Germen and take place for periods of 4 and 6 weeks in January and February.

We offer intensive German courses on different levels (B1-C1). Participants must bring along previous knowledge at level B1 or higher. The intensive classes focus on the four key competencies: reading, speaking, listening and writing. The course will expose you to the German language in various ways. The emphasis will be on the acquisition of language skills that are relevant in academic contexts, such as scientific writing and holding presentations. During project days, both study-related and cultural topics will be worked on and further explored in a creative way, e.g. through expert lectures, discussions and visits to theatres or museums.

Regional and cultural studies play a central role in the Aachener Sprachwinter: you will learn a lot about various aspects of German culture in class. Outside the classroom you will experience a unique region of Germany which is close to Belgium, the Netherlands and France both in terms of geography and culture. Our multifaceted cultural and recreational programme will not only give you the opportunity to get to know Aachen and the surrounding areas, but you can also visit several of our neighbouring countries. Our optional European city trips will take you to two European capitals: Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Paris (France).
