FAQ - Change of Degree Programme

If you are already studying at FH Aachen and would like to continue your studies in another degree programme at our university in a higher (Fach-)semester, this is considered a change of degree programme. Here you can find out which requirements are to be fulfilled and how to proceed.

How do I change the degree programme?

In order to change degree programmes (within FH Aachen), please proceed as follows:

In the case of an unequivocal change to a degree programme without admission restrictions:

Please submit your application for a change of degree programme to the Registrar's Office within the valid deadlines.

For degree programmes with restricted admission: As a rule, please apply within the valid deadlines via the FH Aachen online application portal (hi.fh-aachen.de).  However, we strongly advise you to inform yourself in advance at the Registrar's Office about possible special requirements.

Internal changers with a foreign higher education entrance qualification are strongly advised to inform themselves about the procedure at the Registrar's Office before applying.

The change from a degree programme with a practical semester to the same degree programme without a practical semester, and vice versa, must generally be applied for as a change of degree programme.

A change during the ongoing semester is not possible.

When do I change the degree programme?

The application for a change of degree programme must be submitted within the valid deadlines. If approved, a change of degree programme will take effect at the beginning of a new semester.

A change during the ongoing semester is not possible.

Which requirements do I have to fulfil in order to change a degree programme?

Basic requirements for a change of degree programme are:

- proof of creditable examination results from their previous studies
- a confirmation from the examination board of the respective faculty at FH Aachen of classification in a higher (Fach-)semester

If necessary, further requirements must be fulfilled, such as, for example:

- proof of pre-study practical training
- proof of an aptitude test
- free capacities at the faculty in the respective degree programme

Is a transfer to the new degree programme guaranteed?

No, it isn't. Your application for a change of degree programme must be reviewed by the Registrar's Office. The application will only be approved if there are free capacities available in the new degree programme and if you fulfil all the necessary requirements. Only then will you be able to change the degree programme.

When will I find out whether I've been admitted to the new degree programme?

After your application has been reviewed, you will be informed by the Registrar's Office either by letter or by email.  It is possible that you will receive feedback regarding your application only at the start of the new semester, as it is only at this point in time that it is clear whether there are any free capacities available.
