Industrie 4.0 Summer School

The summer school “Industrie 4.0” gives an insight into the objectives and strategies of Industrie 4.0, shows the current status of activities and provides information on how to benefit from the ideas linked to Industrie 4.0 today. In addition to a theoretical introduction to Industrie 4.0, the main technologies and processes for the implementation of Industrie 4.0 will be introduced and then addressed in greater detail in a workshop. The aim is actually to enable digitisation. Starting from the process itself, the digitisation of processes will be introduced and then expanded on using hands-on examples. A model system will be used to demonstrate the technological possibilities.

  • Learn why Industrie 4.0 is so important for European industry and what is hidden behind the keyword I4.0.
  • Get to know the development strategy for Industrie 4.0 and find out which actions are still to be taken.
  • Learn the keywords related to Industrie 4.0 from Augmented Reality to Cloud, CPS and IoT and on to SmartFactory, value creation chains and XaaS.
  • Look through the entire digital value creation chain from intelligent sensors to cloud services.
  • Understand the technologies that make a machine, system or factory capable for industrial communication.
  • Discover the significance of IT, IT infrastructure and IT security in the context of Industrie 4.0 for an automation system.
  • Design your first digitised processes yourself and find out about the effects on a model factory.

What is Industrie 4.0?

Being sustainable is one of the most important objectives of European production facilities. Together with industry associations, industry and universities, with Industrie 4.0 the German government has launched an initiative that aims to establish Germany as a leading provider of Cyber Physical Systems.

Industrie 4.0 is therefore not a technology but rather a work plan that relates to all areas of production.

New challenges are to be met and activities coordinated starting from processes through digitally networked systems, people and machines through to systems and products. The Industrie 4.0 platform achieves this with a holistic and coordinated strategy. Industrie 4.0 is a long-term development strategy that is only gradually gaining ground in industrial production and has different effects in different industries.

In the past few years the key areas of work have been identified and published in various publicly accessible, strategic publications. RAMI 4.0 has also been developed as a reference architecture model that covers all areas of the digital value creation chain. On the basis of this we are now able to develop new forms of production.

I4.0 Summer School Program


Generally required: The participants should have an interest and enthusiasm in new technologies.

Programming Skills:
Basic knowledge of at least one programming language such as Python or C++.

Language Skills:
Participants should have a good proficiency in English as the ROS Summer School is held completely in English.

The Aachen University of Applied Sciences (FH Aachen) requires that the Industrie 4.0 Summer School participants have appropriate and valid medical, liability and accident insurance for the duration of the Industrie 4.0 Summer School. Please note that the FH Aachen does not cover any of these risks.

Registration Fee

The participation in the Industrie 4.0 Summer School is free for students of the FH Aachen UAS. External applicants are subject to pay a Industrie 4.0 Summer School registration fee which is 750 Euro and includes beverages during the course at the FH Aachen and the social program (excursions included).

Please note that your application is only valid after timely payment. The application procedure is explained on the application form.

If after registering you are unable to attend the summer school, or if you cancel your registration, you may request a refund of your registration fee. You need to send us a written request via email.
Please be aware that payment can be made by bank transfer only. All payments are in EURO. For any bank transfer made from outside the Euro zone, please be aware of bank service charges. All bank charges for remittances are to be borne by the participant!

We are very sorry, registrations for the next Industrie 4.0 Summer School in 2020 are only possible from February, 1st till May, 31st in 2020.

Course Credit, I4.0 Certificate and Transcript

A participation certificate is issued for all I4.0 Summer School students and handed out at the end of the summer school. The certificate lists the topics covered, the duration of the summer school and the course credit (4 ECTS credits). The course credit does not apply for internal I4.0 students (i.e. FH Aachen students, who take part in this course over a longer time period and receive therefore 5 ECTS).

All I4.0 participants have the option to take the final written exam. In the application form, please answer the question "Do you wish to take the final written exam?" correspondingly. Those, who write the exam, will get a I4.0 transcript with a grade for their test performance. The grading scheme is as follows:

from 1.0 to 1.5    =  very good
from 1.6 to 2.5    =  good
from 2.6 to 3.5    =  satisfactory
from 3.6 to 4.0    =  sufficient
above 4.0            =  failed

Accommodation and Food

Accommodation and catering costs are not included in the participation fee. The registration fee includes only beverages during the course at the FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences.
