Complex vascularized airway models to investigate cell-cell interactions
PD Dr. Lena Thiebes, AME - Institut für Angewandte Medizintechnik │Helmholtz-Institut, RWTH Aachen

Respiratory diseases affect millions of people worldwide. To study human airway pathologies under controlled conditions, complex multicellular systems are required. We create three-dimensional tissue models of the respiratory mucosa combining mature epithelium and vascularization, providing a platform that can be utilized for complex disease modeling, such as the pathophysiology of viral infections, mechanobiological research, and for personalized medicine, supporting the progressive reduction and replacement of animal studies.
