Campus and Student Life

Are you curious about life as a Freshman student? Here you can find information about life on the Freshman Campus, how you will live, how we support you and what you can do in your free time. You will also find videos and a picture gallery as well as a few testimonials.

Campuses of the Freshman Program

The campuses in Germany are situated in quiet small towns of about 20,000 to 32,000 people with green environments, the city of Jülich and city of Geilenkirchen.

Most students live in Geilenkirchen, where many shopping facilities are within walking distance. There are supermarkets, restaurants, speciality shops, pharmacies and doctors in the city centre.

The main train station of Geilkirchen is only 5 minutes by bus and 15 minutes walking distance form Campus. From there many larger cities, like Cologne, Düsseldorf or Aachen, can be reached by public transportation with the student ticket (Semester-Ticket), which is included in the program fees.

On Campus in Geilekirchen there is not only the student accommodation, but also classrooms, the consulting team and part of the administration.

Thus, many important places are conveniently located close to the participants

Since 1999 the Freshman Program exists in Lebanon. More information about the Campus and services of the Freshman Program in Lebanon is available here.

Living Conditions

Room

We will assign everyone a room for the duration of the Freshman Program.

  • Students share a room with another person of the same gender during the Freshman Program.
  • 4-8 female or male students live in an apartment with 2-3 rooms.
  • Most apartments have their own kitchen/common room and one bathroom.  Sometimes shared bathrooms are in the hall, in which case there are separate bathrooms for male and female students.
  • Wifi is available in all rooms
  • Additional study rooms are available for learning.
  • There is the possibility to rent a room for birthday parties or other occasions.

Cooking, cleaning, laundry

All students should learn how to cook, clean, do their laundry and sew on buttons and other small objects before coming to Germany.

They are responsible for grocery shopping and cooking their own meals. Many students enjoy cooking together with their roommates and getting to know different dishes.

The school's cafteria is open from Monday to Friday and sells snacks and hot meals during break times.

The apartments, including rooms, kitchens and bathrooms, are regularly cleaned and kept clean by all residents themselves.

There are communal washing machines in the buildings, payable by credit card. Every student has to do his/her own laundry.

Equipment:

  • Per person: single bed, mattress, sheets, blanket, pillow, desk, desk lamp, chair and wardrobe
  • Furnished communal kitchen with oven, stove with 4 cooking elements, refrigerator, table and chairs
  • Shared bathroom with shower, toilet and sink
  • Trash can, clothes drying rack, broom, cleaning supplies and first aid kit

Our team supports the students upon arrival and with their new life in Germany:

  • Pickup from Dusseldorf airport on first arrival in Germany
  • First registration with the city/municipality
  • Visa extension/residence permit
  • Individual consultation on academic and social issues
  • Orientation and workshops for further university studies and life in general in Germany
  • Appointments with a doctor on campus (after registration)
  • Caretaker service
  • Security service at night and on weekends

Health Insurance and more

During the Freshman Program

Starting on 1 October, all students have a private insurance package during the Freshman Program.

  • Health insurance, including travel health insurance
  • Liability insurance
  • Accident insurance

The private health insurance included in this package covers most medical and dental problems that may arise during the Freshman Program. However, it does not cover treatment for illnesses/conditions that existed prior to arrival in Germany.

Private health insurance companies reimburse the costs of a doctor's visit. However, patients must first pay the bill themselves and then submit the bill to the insurance company.

After the Freshman Program

When students enroll in a bachelor's program after completion of the Freshman Program, they will be required by law to purchase health insurance at a German public health insurance company.  This currently costs approximately € 110 per month.  More information will be available during the Freshman Program.

German public health insurance covers most medical and dental problems.

Students must purchase their own liability and other insurances after the Freshman Program.

Free Time

Music and Culture

During the Freshman Program, singing and music lessons are offered, for example for piano, guitar or drums. Students who already play an instrument can continue to practice during their time on campus and are also welcome to bring their instrument from home.

Everytime there are people who contruibute with their musical talent to various events, such as the St. Nicholas celebration in December or the summer festival on campus. Everyone always has a great time!

The team organizes various creative workshops, day trips or cooking classes for the participants in the Freshman Program.

Sports

On Campus students have the option to use the table tennis for free or play soccer/football on the sports field in front of the student residences. Most years the team organizes a student-soccer-tournament.

Additionally students can sign up for other sports activities like for example badminton or basketball free of cost. The green fields surrounding the Campus invite runners to enjoy nature for a run.

Next to Campus there is a fitness studio. Students can sign up for a membership and use the facilities. The gym offers cardio machines and weight lifting as well as sports courses.

For those interested there is also a tennis and a golf court which registered members can use.

Working in Germany

Students are not permitted to work during the Freshman Program.

After completion of the Freshman Program, students enrolled at German universities are permitted to work part-time.

Upon completion of their degree, students may stay in Germany for up to one and a half years to find employment.

"Hi, I’m Janssen and I come from Indonesia. This is a golden opportunity for me studying in Germany. It’s quite easy to adapt with the environment with the help of Freshman Program. I can make a lot of friends and learn a lot of cultures from various country. In addition, the Social Team in Freshman is very responsive and kind-hearted to help the students which makes us feel safe here. All in all, I am grateful to be a part of Freshman Program to prepare for my further career."

Rydell

"The Freshman program has been a perfect link for me between my school years and the university life. I've had some of my best days over here, making memories with so many friends and teachers. The various activities and events that were brought to us made us feel like home and even though we were in a foreign country, it felt like it was my second home. The freshman year is a memory that I will always cherish forever."

Tanveer

"The Freshman Program is the smoothest transition between your local high school and your Bachelor studies in Germany. With the help of the excellent staff members I was ensured the best quality education and I also improved my German language skills within a short span of time. Almost all the legal work were taken care of by the Freshman Program and hence there was barely anything to worry about except my studies. I was provided with the best learning environment with all the support and help from student helpers and tutors. They also organized many events and there were various activities every week. If you know how to have fun you’ll have the best social time of your life during the Freshman Program. I could never feel unhappy with the huge football pitch, tennis courts, golf course and the relaxing views all around the place. Therefore I recommend the Freshman Program to the ones reading this."
