Shaping the future in an interdisciplinary way.
Our Master of Arts "Design" is a degree programme for "thinking together". Its unique selling point is the exploration of the intersections of different design disciplines in concrete projects.
Through the institutionalised combination of disciplines, our students learn to see something during their studies that many designers only achieve later through years of on-the-job training. They are able to create comprehensive, independent design solutions in the field of communication and/or product design by utilising interdisciplinary synergies. They incorporate current professional and social developments. In doing so, they identify the strategic dimension of design and its potential for society, business, science and culture.
In the MA Design degree programme, students learn to develop viable concepts, recognise the interface between different disciplines and connect them. With this knowledge, they will be able to put together, coordinate and lead collaborative and interdisciplinary teams in their future working life. They mediate and skilfully move between coordinates such as communication and space, product and communication, space and interaction.
The constructive and solution-orientated exchange is an important aspect of the degree programme and also decisive in later professional life. Graduates of our degree programme are actively involved in shaping the future; as designers, they design, conceive and act ethically and socially responsibly in terms of social, ecological and economic sustainability.

"Learning from each other - that's how I would describe studying at the faculties in three words. Every task in the programme required an independent examination of the content of a topic, followed by structuring, concept, development and iteration. The breadth of the degree programme allowed me to work through these processes on many different topics, concepts and media. This experience helps me in my day-to-day work with pretty much every new challenge. The climate crisis will not allow us to keep designing the next unnecessary brand or product. As designers and drivers of innovation, we should put design as innovation in the shadow of sustainability. I would advise aspiring designers to choose their tasks and jobs based on whether they really contribute to the common good."

"Those who decide to study design often follow a passion. Many creative minds come together at FH Aachen and learn to use their creativity in a targeted way during their Bachelor's degree. If you want more, you do a Master's degree on top, like I did. When I am asked why I chose FH Aachen again, the answer is easy for me. In addition to the fact that Aachen is a beautiful and extremely student-friendly city, the special study concept was the decisive factor for me. The two disciplines of communication and product design, which can only be studied separately in the Bachelor's programme, are combined. Contrary to the common approach of specialising in the Master's degree, completely new worlds open up here. As a communication designer, I was also able to immerse myself in the world of product design. I particularly enjoyed designing in space."
