The FB8 visits the Maria Montessori Comprehensive School in Aachen

On July 9, 2026, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics accepted an invitation from the Maria Montessori Comprehensive School in Aachen and held a math workshop titled “The Missing Square” for an 8th-grade class.

The workshop focused on mind-boggling geometric puzzles and mathematical phenomena: How is it possible for geometric surfaces to seemingly disappear or suddenly appear? How can an ordinary postcard be cut in such a way that you can climb through it? How does a simple postcard become an amazing three-dimensional object through clever folding? And how can you encode a secret message?

Prof. Heinrich Hemme, a former physics professor in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics at Aachen University of Applied Sciences, presented numerous puzzles and curiosities from the world of geometry. With vivid experiments and surprising effects, he repeatedly amazed the students, encouraging them to think and participate.
