Target group: Schoolgirls in Years 8 to 10
During the second week of the autumn half-term, 16 schoolgirls in Years 8 to 10 will have the opportunity to discover the exciting world of STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Together, we’ll take a look at various technical degree programmes and careers and experience them first-hand in a variety of workshops. This year’s programme includes civil engineering, chemistry, medical technology, aerospace engineering, computer science and electrical engineering.
The programme is aimed at all girls who …
- want to find out whether a STEM degree is right for them,
- enjoy technology and want to try something new,
- are looking forward to an exciting and varied autumn half-term.
Participation in the ‘Mach MINT!’ Technology Days is free of charge. The projects created during the workshops can be taken home at the end.

We’ve also put together a fantastic programme for 2026! We’ll be flying a plane in a simulator, making our own tech-themed Halloween pumpkins, trying our hand at building a Leonardo bridge, and carrying out experiments in the chemistry lab.

Wednesday, 28 October: Civil Engineering
Escape Room: “Save the Energy!”
The city is on the verge of a blackout. A smart building has gone haywire, and you’re the only team that can save it. To do so, you’ll work as a group to solve puzzles, measure electricity consumption, track down energy losses, and make smart decisions about the building’s controls.
Thursday, 29 October: Medical Technology and Applied Chemistry
Medical Technology Engineer – “From Chip to Sensor”
How do sensors work and what exactly is inside a microchip? In this workshop, you’ll learn the basics of photolithography during a guided tour of the cleanroom and then, through hands-on measurements, discover how different sensors work and what signals they produce. In the process, you’ll gain a technical insight into the world of sensor technology and learn about the study and career prospects in medical technology at FH Aachen, Jülich Campus.
Applied Chemistry—For a Sustainable Future
Applied chemistry plays a much bigger role in our daily lives than many people realize. This will become clear in the workshop through a very real-world product—but we won’t reveal any more than that just yet. Just this much: through experiments and the joint interpretation of the results, you’ll uncover the secret behind how the product works, carry out its chemical synthesis yourselves, and then perhaps even develop your very own ideas for all the useful things you can do with the resulting product. Friday, 24 October: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Pumpkin & Code – We’re making a flickering pumpkin lamp
Do you love Halloween, technology and surprises? Then our ‘Pumpkin & Code’ workshop is just the thing for you!
Forget the classic carved pumpkin – here, you’ll build a smart Halloween decoration that reacts automatically when someone approaches. Your pumpkin will recognise passers-by, move in a flash and light up spookily – all built by you!
What to expect
- Motion detection: A sensor detects when someone is approaching – so your pumpkin ‘sees’ who’s coming.
- Jerking movement: A motor creates the perfect moment of fright – just the way you want it.
- Spooky lighting effects: Programmable LEDs create atmospheric lighting or sudden flashes of light.
- 3D-printed casing: Everything is housed in a 3D-printed pumpkin casing.
What does a female pilot do? An insight into flight simulation and gliding
After a brief introduction to the basics of flying, you’ll have the chance to take a seat in the flight simulator and gain first-hand experience of piloting an aeroplane. An instructor will guide you step by step through the individual phases of flight, from take-off to landing, whilst you’ll also learn about simulation technology and the roles of female engineers in aviation.
