Development of energy-efficient algorithms based on machine learning for the automated search for extraterrestrial life
The TRIPLE LifeDetect project focuses on the search for biosignatures, i.e. traces of life such as cells, cell-like structures or microorganisms. However, continuous sampling results in a high volume of data with relatively low information content (i.e. images without biosignatures). The aim is to filter out these images efficiently so that only those with high information content are transmitted. The algorithms can be adapted to focus on different aspects; as an alternative to biosignatures, it is also possible to search for minerals stirred up in the water in order to analyse geological samples.

Contribution to the DLR TRIPLE AstroBioLab Project
The Institute of Bioengineering (IfB) is looking for committed students to work on the DLR AstroBioLab (ABL) project in the following areas:
- Hardware development – assembly, prototyping and testing of experimental setups and measurement systems
- Software development – programming, automation and system integration
- Data analysis – processing, visualisation and evaluation of laboratory data
- Machine learning – development and application of ML models to experimental datasets
You should meet the following requirements:
- Enrolled at a university
- Basic knowledge of Python
- Experience with or an interest in Autodesk Inventor (CAD) would be an advantage
- Technical understanding and a passion for problem-solving
