Executive Board

Since 2014, the SIJ team has been led by Prof. Dr Ulf Herrmann.

Prof. Herrmann has been involved in solar technology for more than 25 years, particularly in the areas of research and development as well as project management and organisational development. After his studies at RWTH Aachen University, he first worked scientifically at the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research in Stuttgart and did his doctorate at RWTH. He then moved to industry to work for a technology supplier for solar power plants. During this time, he worked on the development and implementation of solar thermal power plants and thermal energy storage systems in various countries. Before joining SIJ, he managed a subsidiary in the USA for more than two years. At SIJ, he conducts research within the following main research and development areas:

• Solar thermal systems with a focus on:
  • solar thermal power plants
  • storage technologies
  • Parabolic trough collectors
• High-temperature heat storage
• Power-to-heat and power-to-heat-to-power systems
• Sector coupling
