State-Funded Organisations for the Promotion of Gifted Students
Have you found a scholarship programme at one of the 13 state-funded organisations for the promotion of gifted students that you think fits well with the requirements of the foundation?
Then it's time to apply.
Don't be put off by the cliché that all scholarship holders are high-flyers. The chances of being awarded a scholarship are not that bad - it's definitely worth a try. When making your application, you should pay attention to individuality, diligence and commitment.
The application for a scholarship must be submitted about six months before the start of funding. You can find out exactly when this is and which formal criteria you still need to fulfil on the websites of the respective funding organisations. Read the website of your favourite foundation carefully to find out more about the application process.
Tips for Your Application
The Written Application
It usually starts with a written application via the respective online portal of the favoured foundation. Depending on the scholarship organisation (Begabtenförderwerk), the following elements should be included:
- Letter of motivation | You explain why you are applying for the scholarship, to what extent you are a good fit for the foundation, what your goals are and how you would like to realise them. You also report on your social commitment. It is therefore important that you have familiarised yourself very well with the philosophy of the sponsor.
- Curriculum vitae | Curriculum vitae in tabular and/or formulated form. In the second form, you must describe your personal background on up to three pages.
- Expert opinion or letter of recommendation | Teachers, professors, clergy or companies can write expert opinions. They should know you and your social commitment.
- Certificates of achievement | Your Abitur certificate and (if already available) academic certificates and grade transcripts (to be obtained from the relevant Examination Office).
Please always observe the formal criteria of the respective foundation when making your application!
The Personal Selection Process
If your written application is satisfactory, you will proceed to the next round: Your potential sponsor wants to get to know you better and see if you are a good match. This happens, for example, during individual interviews, group discussions or presentations. You will often be asked about your CV or asked to comment on a current topic. In rare cases, you will be given the task of writing an essay or a written examination.
Preparation is Key
You can find out more about the respective application procedures and formal requirements on the websites of the organisations for the promotion of gifted students. Please note the exact application deadlines of the respective foundation. Start your research and preparations early.
