Frequently Asked Questions
This FAQ list will grow over time! If you cannot find information on relevant topics for your curriculum or degree programme on the faculty's homepage, please send your question to the student body of the faculty (Fachschaft) using the form at the bottom of this page. The student body of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics works closely with the web admins for the homepage. If questions on certain topics accumulate, they will either be added to the FAQ list here or websites with the missing information will be supplemented accordingly.
How do I create my timetable?
This question is often asked by freshers and transfer students. The following applies to freshers on a Bachelor's degree programme:
You will be given a timetable for the first semester. You will be divided into groups. You are therefore directly registered for the respective course. You will be allocated to groups by a certain date in September. You can then see which group you are in on Campus Office. Then all you have to do is drag the courses into your timetable. You can find out how to do this in the following instructions.
Transfer students and students from the second semester onwards must then create their timetable themselves using Campus Office: www.campusoffice.fh-aachen.de
If you have any problems with the tool, please contact the student body of the faculty (Fachschaft).
I would like to buy a laptop for my studies. What features should it have so that I can use it for my studies?
You will probably work with Inventor, Ansys, Matlab or other programmes during your studies. In order to be able to run these programmes on your own laptop, you should consider in advance which device you will use during your studies.
You can find an overview of the requirements on the faculties website Information about starting your degree programme.
Tip: If you can't afford a computer at the moment, have a look at the AStA website, where you can borrow a device with the necessary equipment.
What can you do for crediting as "general competences"?
There are various ways to collect credits for the compulsory module "General Competences". It is best to check your examination regulations, which you received when you were admitted to your degree programme.
Of course, you can help out as a tutor during Freshers' Week or even join the FSR if you wish. As a tutor, you would help with the planning and organisation of Freshers' Week so that the new freshers have a great start to their studies. The highlight is always the freshers' trip.
You can also help with the exercises or practicals for a teaching module and become a maths tutor, pro8 tutor, CAD tutor, etc., for example. In addition, there are language courses in English or French, for example, which you can also have recognised.
If you can think of anything else where you can volunteer at the university, please ask us or the relevant teacher directly. A good solution can usually be found in individual cases.
How can I have the tutoring activity recognised as general skills (3rd semester)?
To do this, you attend the ESP tutor seminar and then help out as a tutor with the first-year project. Afterwards, you register a report about your time and submit it to the FSR by email.
Framework conditions for the report:
- 4 pages, font size 12, font Arial, line spacing 1.15
- Answer the following questions in the body text:
1. What tasks did you have as a tutor?
2. What did you learn as a tutor?
3. What skills did you acquire as a tutor?
4. What can you take with you for the future?
In addition, please write in the email to the FSR8 (fsr-8fh-aachen.de):
- Name
- Degree programme
- Subject-specific semester, period
- Tutor activity
- Participation in ESP seminar (date)
- Time spent in hours
You will then receive a certificate from the FSR confirming your work as a tutor.
You then submit this to the Examination Office and receive credit for your 6 CP (for 2 years) or 3 CP.
When do the basic exams (8010120 - Fundamentals of Mathematics for Engineers) take place?
You can take the written examination for the first time at the beginning of the winter semester, usually during Freshers' Week. You can find the exact date on the maths pre-course/basic module homepage. There is an additional date at the end of November/beginning of December. After that, you can take the written examination (just like any other) in the regular examination periods (February/March and July).
What can I do if I have psychological problems and feel overwhelmed during my studies? Who can help me?
A first point of contact can be the student body of the faculty (Fachschaft) 8. Sometimes an open discussion between students there can already show ways out of the situation. If the problems are more serious, you can contact the Psychosocial Counselling team and make an appointment for an initial consultation.
If the problems are due to a physical disability or chronic illness, you may also be able to get help from the representative of students with disabilities or chronic illnesses at FH Aachen.
How do I become a first-year tutor?
It is best to contact the student body of the faculty by email: [email protected]. You should then attend an ESP seminar so that you can have your tutoring activities recognised as "General Competences": Click here to register for the ESP seminar.
Simply ask the FSR8 - here via email form!
