Industrie 4.0 Summer School in Pori (Finnland) 2024

Smart Energy: AI-powered Energy Monitoring and Sensing Applied to Coffee Machines

In this interactive workshop, the participating students immersed themselves in the exciting world of non-invasive sensor technology and energy monitoring using a practical application example - a coffee machine! They gained a lot of practical experience by learning how to record and evaluate process data and using it to make improvements and increase efficiency.

This year's Industry 4.0 Summer School was preceded by a two-week digital preparation course. It took place from 2 - 9 September 2024 in Pori (Finland) at Satakunta University (SAMK) under the direction of Prof. Wollert and his team (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics at FH Aachen). The Finnish SAMK, the Belgian PXL University of Applied Sciences and Arts, the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences HSBI and FH Aachen used a BIP programme in order to expand cooperation between the universities and strengthen mutual exchange. A total of 25 students of computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and related subject areas invested a semester week to take part in our "Smart Engergy: xxx" Summer School, whose long title (see above) we succinctly abbreviated to "Hack your coffee machine".

Summer School participants learned about the basics and applications of non-invasive sensor technology, received an introduction to energy monitoring systems, dealt with data acquisition and analysis in real time, designed and trained an AI model for predicting and optimising process information and put the concepts they had learned into practice on a coffee machine.

The mornings were filled with theoretical lectures and application examples, while in the afternoons the participants had to try their hand at programming. It quickly became clear that clear and comprehensible communication is not only important for solving technical challenges in Industry 4.0, but also leads to success in group work. The summer school participants had a varied leisure programme: a visit to an ice hockey match and several excursions into and around the city of Pori, which is located in a densely wooded area on the Baltic Sea.
