Services

In the BigDataLab we actually always have open topics from the areas of

* Big Data Infrastructure

* Data Science Projects

* Machine Learning projects

To get a rough overview of the research field, take a look at our current projects, for example.

If you want to do your work externally, that is also possible. However, it should fit thematically into the above-mentioned fields.

The formal procedure is then as follows:

Before starting the work:

Internal work:

* You contact me via email or WebEx (see EmailPolicy) and we discuss the possible topics in a WebEx or in presence.

External work:

* Together with your external supervisor, who must have at least the degree you are aiming for (Bachelor or Master) in a STEM subject, you prepare an exposé on your topic that describes the topic and the work you have to do. (Approx. 1-2 Din A4 pages)

* We will then discuss the further procedure in a joint WebEx.

Practical project/Bachelor's thesis

In the case of Bachelor's theses, I design the topics in such a way that the practical project and final thesis follow on from each other and deal with one topic as a whole.

Start of the thesis:

You download the application form from the PA, fill it out, sign it and send it to me by email. I then forward it to the PA.

End of the practical project

At the end of the practical project, you give a half-hour presentation (in presence or WebEx), followed by questions on the PP. This gives you the opportunity to practice a presentation, introduce your topic and get feedback on what you have done so far.

Registration for the BA

The procedure is the same as for the PP registration

Handing in the BA

You hand in the BA electronically to me. The submission includes:

* The written work, including the declaration of independence signed by you as a PDF file.

* The sources you used, if you refer to scientific papers.

* The source code you prepared (including image files of the written paper)

* In the case of external work: the data you used, if applicable in excerpts and pseudonymised form, so that the code can be traced.

For sources, source code and data, you can submit a zip file up to 10MB in size. Otherwise, please use a git repository or the file sharing service gigamove of the RWTH (link).

Colloquium

In the colloquium you will give a 30-minute presentation on your work (in presence or WebEx), followed by questions on your work. You will receive your grade at the Examination Office approximately one week after the colloquium.

Master's thesis

You download the application form from the PA, fill it out, sign it and send it to me by email. I then forward it to the PA.

Approximately halfway through the planned time, you give an interim presentation of about 30 minutes, followed by questions about the work.

Submission and colloquium are the same as for a BA (see above).
