Study Contents

The Biotechnology Master's degree programme provides you with the necessary skills to fill an interdisciplinary professional field. You will gain a detailed picture of current topics in biology at a high scientific level as well as in-depth knowledge of a variety of state-of-the-art methods for analysing and describing complex life processes. You will acquire the scientific skills to competently analyse situations and tasks, to assess these analyses and to act in a goal-oriented manner based on this assessment.

You will learn to holistically understand biological processes in technical processes and plants and to independently develop possible solutions to problems that may arise. They learn to delegate partial aspects of the analysis within a team and to practically implement individually found partial solutions in a synthetic process with your team partners in a viable solution strategy.

The Study Plan

Here, you can take a look at the study plan, all subjects are listed with details of the scope for the theoretical and practical part of the courses. Clicking on the module name will take you to the module descriptions, where you can find out more about the content of the individual subjects.

This study plan is valid for all students who start their studies from SS2022.

Biotechnology M.Sc. with Practical Semester.

Compared to Master studies in Biotechnology at many other universities, we offer you:

  • intensive individual supervision during the course of study and the final thesis
  • a course of study including the state-recognised further training courses in accordance with §§ 15 and 17 GenTSV to acquire the expertise as a project leader or as a Biosafety Officer (BBS)
  • acquisition of practice-relevant skills, writing a proposal for external funding, writing a publication, practising English-language presentations and active participation in scientific discussion groups
  • alternative forms of examination distributed throughout the semester (e.g. in the form of lectures, participation in discussions, few written examinations)
  • the opportunity to complete a practical semester before the Master's thesis in order to gain practical experience
  • a free choice of location for the final thesis, which can be within the university in the context of in-house industrial cooperation with renowned companies from the biotech sector or within the Institute for Biotechnology (INB), or outside the university, e.g. in industry or at the Jülich Research Centre (very high practical relevance, building up contacts!)
  • a new focus on bioeconomics, which introduces you to the concepts of biorefinery technology and consolidated bioprocesses in theory and practice, providing an overview of the current status and current problems of value creation with a focus on biotechnological processing options
