Transportation
At a Glance
Mobility has always been a key element of human societies. From the first steps on two legs to the emergence of vehicles that can transport us over land, water and air, mobility has constantly evolved and has significantly shaped the way we live, work and interact. The factors driving this change are diverse and complex. From environmental concerns and the need to find sustainable solutions for our energy consumption to technological breakthroughs such as autonomous driving and electric drive technology, we face challenges as well as opportunities that need to be recognised and shaped.
Civil engineers working in the transport sector plan, build and operate a wide range of infrastructure facilities, such as railway stations, roads and cycle paths. Tasks include planning road design or developing integrated transport concepts for all modes of transport in the context of spatial development. In addition, strategic topics such as traffic and mobility management and forecasting transport demand are becoming increasingly important. Studying civil engineering will provide you with a very good, comprehensive foundation and skills that will ultimately enable you to realise qualified and scientifically sound solutions from the initial project idea through to implementation.
Career Opportunities
The demand for civil engineers from the areas of specialisation in transport is very high due to the good qualifications of the graduates. The classic employers include
- Construction companies
- Public service: local authorities, supra-local specialist authorities (Landesbetrieb Straße....), transport associations, etc.
- Transport planning offices
- German railways
- Local transport companies such as ASEAG
- Associations (e.g. ADAC, ADFC, VCD)
- Research organisations (e.g. Federal Highway Research Institute bast)
- In the first 4 semesters (core studies 1 and 2), the general engineering fundamentals are taught and students also gain basic knowledge of all areas of specialisation that can be chosen later.
- Core studies 2 is followed by the specialisation programme. In transport engineering, this is as follows:
- 5th semester: urban transport, public transport, road planning, statics in transport, general competences
- 6th semester: Road construction and track construction (compulsory module), railway systems (compulsory module), environmental planning in road engineering, traffic and mobility management, axis staking in road engineering and GIS, traffic survey, ...
- The 7th and 8th semesters are then followed by the practical or study project and the Bachelor's thesis with the subsequent colloquium.
