Tubus Büchel: Street furniture for interim use at Büchel
The aim of the project is to build a multifunctional piece of street furniture 1:1 in the form of a practical project and to use it for 2-3 years during the interim use at Büchel. The furniture is developed from themes of the place, which are very diverse. Both the thermal water train and the visual axes to the city centre with the cathedral, Aachen window and city hall are integrated into the concept.
The street furniture should
- establish a sense of place.
- have an unusual presence in its form, colour and idea and be highly visible as an eye-catcher.
- create a new public space and offer the possibility of meetings, actions, etc. as a platform.
- be usable and integrate different functions, e.g. sitting, speaking, gathering.
- integrate pictures and texts on historical references as information carriers.
- be built from low-cost and recycled materials.
- consist of elementary parts; optionally be 3D-printed.
Through the project, the following skills and competences are acquired and trained:
- Experience of the entire process from design to implementation planning to realisation.
- Dealing with integral planning that pursues the unity of design and construction
- Planning of the realisable elements, detailed constructional planning and development of the connection methods / materials in the team
- 3D modelling, preparation of models for printability and creation of 3D print files and acquisition of the techniques and special features of 3D printing (processes, wall thicknesses, support structures, materials, etc.)
- Conception and implementation of experimental test series
- Learning organisational processes in the team (purchasing, practical applications, sponsoring and contact with executing companies)
