Conceptualization and Implementation of a Continuous Delivery Pipeline for the coffee4j Testing Framework

Softwareentwicklungsprojekte benötigen zuverlässige Prozesse für die Integration, das Testen
und die Veröffentlichung von Änderungen. Zusätzlich erfordert eine effektive Softwareentwicklung eine gute Kommunikation und Koordination, damit Teammitglieder ihren Fortschritt regelmäßig abstimmen und gemeinsam auf Releases hinarbeiten können. Forschungssoftware
im universitären Umfeld steht dabei vor besonderen Herausforderungen, da sich Entwicklungsteams häufig ändern und die Beteiligten unterschiedliche Zeitpläne haben.

Das Testframework coffee4j wird an einer Hochschule von Studierenden im Rahmen ihrer Abschlussarbeiten
entwickelt. Die Studierenden arbeiten meist unabhängig an einzelnen Funktionen, haben unterschiedliche Start- und Abgabetermine und nur begrenzten Kontakt zu anderen Entwicklern. Dies erschwert die Koordination, Integration und Veröffentlichung von Änderungen.
Diese Arbeit untersucht den bestehenden Entwicklungs- und Releaseprozess von coffee4j und entwickelt einen neuen Workflow mit Unterstützung einer Continuous-Delivery-Pipeline.

Abstract

Software development projects require reliable processes to integrate, test, and release changes. Effective software development also depends on communication and coordination practices that allow team members to regularly synchronize their progress and work toward common release goals. Research software developed in a university context faces particular challenges, as development teams can change frequently and contributors may have different schedules and responsibilities.

The coffee4j testing framework is developed at a university by students as part of their thesis projects. Students typically work independently on individual features, with different starting and submission dates and limited contact with other developers. This can make coordinating, integrating, and releasing changes difficult. This thesis examines the current development and release workflow of coffee4j and proposes a new workflow supported by a continuous delivery pipeline to improve the development and release process.
