1.06.16

Three consultants from design practice will present their careers, work and companies.

  • Dipl. Des. Željko Pezely
  • Dipl. Des. Udo Ermert
  • Prof. Katja Becker

In addition, Dipl. Des. Martin Beeh will give a lecture on the topic of design management.

A panel discussion is planned afterwards.

During the break, there will be room for small talk and technical discussions over snacks and drinks. Following the presentations, aspects of the evening relating to design, management and careers will be discussed in the panel discussion with our consultants.

Information about our consultants

Željko Pezely graduated from FH Aachen with a degree in communication design in 2000. In the same summer, he moved to Munich to join the Serviceplan advertising agency as Junior Art Director. He is currently Creative Director at the HEYE advertising agency and looks after clients such as the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Bosch, Mammut, Wirgleys and Thomas Cook. He is also jointly responsible for recruiting creative staff at the agency. He is a Lecturer in the faculties of design at the Munich University of Applied Sciences and a Lecturer or project supervisor at various design schools (U5, Macromediahochschule, FH Rosenheim, Masterclass Art Direction) as well as the ADC Germany. Željko has won several design and creative awards and was recently a member of the film jury at the New York Festival. In his lecture, he will use his career and his work to make a plea for early career management: "Float or fly? It doesn't matter - the main thing is to land properly."

UdoErmert (PD) is Senior Design Manager at the Vaillant Group. The graduate designer will give a lecture on the topic: "Product design is a multi-discipline sport - design between ambition, economy and time pressure": "Industrial designers work within a very specific framework of corporate strategies, processes, cost analyses and market research. And they are often seen as the saviour who materialises and realises the previously unthought or unseen. Should a designer even take on this role, which is often seen as purely creative? What values - beyond aesthetic perception - can designers bring to companies?"

Katja Becker (KD) is a professor of "visual communication in digital media" at Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences and owner of the communications agency beau buero in Cologne (www.beau-buero.de). Her lecture deals with the question "Is good design measurable?": "What is design quality and how do I determine the quality of design services? The interactive lecture raises questions and deals with the seemingly contradictory topic of the measurability of design and possible criteria for design quality."

Martin Beeh is a management consultant and industrial designer in the field of design management. After working for Décathlon International (Lille), Industrial Design Centre AEG Hausgeräte GmbH (Nuremberg) and Electrolux Industrial Design Centre (Stockholm and Porcia, Italy), the management consultant founded beeh_innovation in 2009. (www.beeh_innovation.de). The "red dot design award" juror has also been a lecturer in management and planning methods at FH Aachen since the summer semester.

Design | Performance | Benefits

Assessment of design services and their benefits for clients
The following questions will be discussed: What are the consequences of the paradigm shift towards identity competition? How can clients' benefit expectations be linked to the services offered by designers?
Joachim Kobuss is a partner for development processes in the design sector. He runs an office for design economic development under the DesignersBusiness® brand and, together with partners, the Institute for Design Policy Development - Unternehmen:Design - both based in Berlin and with an office in Cologne. #1: "Promoting careers and seizing opportunities"

9.01.14

Career planning doesn't just start when you receive your degree certificate. Even during their studies, students should gain practical experience and test their own limits in order to realise where they want to go in practice. The first futurebox practice and career day supported the students in this orientation process, with successful designers sharing their experiences and bringing along concrete practical training and job offers.

Carlo Matic, founder and Executive Director of Interactive Pioneers, kicked things off. He emphasised the value of practical experience and urged students not to be shy, but to show initiative during their studies and gain a wide range of experience through part-time jobs and practical trainings.

He was replaced by André Poulheim, Managing Director at Frackenpohl Poulheim. He emphasised that the most important aspect of the profession, passion, can already be seen in the students' portfolios. Designers are bridge builders, communicators and craftsmen.

Dorian Kurz, product designer at Kurz und Kurz Design, emphasised how important it is to pay less attention to a strict timetable during studies and to devote more time to developing your own personality as a designer. Products should be true to life and, in the best case, interest-related.

After a short break, during which the students were able to interact with the speakers, Christian Bültmann and Fabian Jung took over the lectern. The two emphasised the importance of taking part in competitions for the later job search. They emphasised the importance of taking part in competitions in order to find a job later on. Joachim Kobuss, coach and scout for designers and entrepreneurs, rounded off the event with a degree. He gave the students an overview of the current market situation for young designers and emphasised that developing your own work policy is essential for a successful career start.

To summarise, all speakers agreed that practical experience and getting to know work processes in agencies, through part-time jobs, practical trainings and competitions at an early stage form the basis for successful career planning. However, testing one's own preferences, gaining new experiences, contributing passion and initiative and, last but not least, having fun are also essential for professional and personal success.
