Subject area mathematical statistics
Stochastics is a topic of mathematics that deals with the concept of randomness. It is typically divided into probability theory and mathematical statistics. Probability theory focuses on the mathematical modelling of random events, assuming that the parameters of the underlying models are fixed and known. In contrast, in mathematical statistics we obtain information about unknown model parameters based on random observations.
