The examination phases/periods can be found at the Examinations Office/Office Campus Jülich.

General competences

In the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science degree programme, students can acquire credits in the area of "General Competencies" by choosing different modules. A selection of the modules offered can be found in the General Competencies module catalogue in the current Examination Regulations.

For modules that are not assigned to a specific course (e.g. "university projects"), the student must ask the person responsible for the module whether the corresponding activity can be credited before carrying out the activity.

The module "Company tutoring activity" can only be applied for once during the degree programme.

To apply for credit points, complete the form after completing the activity and have it signed by your employer and the module supervisor.

At the study locations, the module coordinators are represented by the following persons in case of absence:

  • Study location Cologne: Prof. Dr Karola Merkel
  • Study location Jülich: Oliver Bücker
  • Study location Aachen: Benno Wienke

Other activities or courses can also be credited that are not listed in the module catalogue and may have already been completed. Please contact the Deputy Chairman of the Examination Board, Prof. Dr Alexander Voß, who will then check the recognition of your achievements on a case-by-case basis.

It is not necessary to register via the online service for student administration (QIS)!

Seminar

The "Seminar" module is usually held in the 5th semester. The seminar should enable the student to write a scientific paper on a topic from mathematics or computer science and to give a presentation on this topic in front of an audience.

The topic of the seminar must be agreed with the supervising professor (first examiner) and the second examiner (usually a person from the training company).

It may be advisable to coordinate the topic of the seminar with the topic of the Bachelor's thesis. For this purpose, a partial aspect of the Bachelor's thesis, e.g. a technology used, the description of a special application domain or the planned mathematical procedures, can be described and presented in an overview.

The written elaboration and the technical presentation each account for 50% of the assessment.

The following documents must be submitted:

  • an abstract (one A4 page)
  • the written elaboration
  • the slides for the technical presentation

It is not necessary to register via the online programme administration service (QIS)!

  1. Finding a topic for the seminar paper - ideally based on the Bachelor's thesis
  2. Consultation with the supervising professor (first examiner) and second examiner (usually a person from the training company) - Fill out the routing slip
  3. The topic and the first and second examiners must be determined by 15 October of the current year - make additions to the routing slip.
Depending on the place of study, this data must also be submitted electronically by the student by this date.
  4. Preparation of the written thesis ( approx. 20 pages without index structure and attachment) and the abstract (approx. 1 DIN A4 page). The thesis must contain a declaration . Depending on the place of study, the paper must also be submitted electronically.
  5. When submitting the dissertation: Arrange a date(location, room, time) for the presentation with the supervising first and second examiners. Depending on the place of study, the dates and rooms are arranged by the supervising professor or the education department. In addition, it is determined who is responsible for inviting a sufficient number of listeners. A sufficient number of listeners can be ensured, for example, by
    • Compulsory attendance of all students supervised by a professor or an entire year group, or
    • participation of a corresponding number of employees as audience members of the training company
    • Preparation of presentation slides (presentation length should not be less than 20 minutes and not exceed 30 minutes)
  6. Submission of the presentation slides up to 2 days before the planned presentation date by sending them (email) to the first and second examiners. Depending on the place of study, the submission must also be made electronically.
  7. Realisation of the presentation.
  8. Assessment of the seminar on the basis of an assessment scheme by the two examiners following the presentation. The supervisor of the training company has an advisory role in the assessment. The grade is documented on the routing slip and forwarded by the supervising professor to the examination secretariat/office at the Jülich campus.

IMPORTANT: As the seminar paper and the routing slip are examination documents, the student must keep a copy of the seminar paper and a copy of the routing slip for five years. The documents must be handed over at the request of the Examination Secretariat/Office on the Jülich campus.

Bachelor thesis & colloquium

You complete your degree programme with the Bachelor's thesis and colloquium modules. The Bachelor's thesis is a written elaboration on a topic of your choice; the colloquium is the associated oral examination.

Requirements for admission to the Bachelor's thesis can be found in the Examination Regulations.

A prerequisite for admission to the colloquium is confirmation from both examiners that the Bachelor's thesis has been assessed as at least 'sufficient'.

After passing both parts, your degree programme is completed and you will be awarded the degree "Bachelor of Science".

IMPORTANT: Since the 2013 Examination Regulations, it has been possible to take the final examination for the Mathematical-Technical Software Developer programme AFTER submitting the Bachelor's thesis and completing the colloquium as the last module examination of the degree programme. This provides more flexibility in the scheduling of the Bachelor's thesis. However, since the final examination of the training is a module of the degree programme, it is not possible to complete the degree programme WITHOUT completing the training to become a mathematical-technical software developer. Consequently, NO Bachelor's degree is awarded.

At the Aachen study location in particular, further employment (after studies and training) at RWTH Aachen University is ONLY possible with a Bachelor's degree.

Procedure/ Process

  1. Finding a topic for the Bachelor's thesis
Due to the link between the degree programme and training as a mathematical-technical software developer, potential topics for the Bachelor's thesis are usually developed in your own training company.

To write a Bachelor's thesis, you must find a first examiner and a second examiner (usually a person from the training company). The first examiner of the Bachelor's thesis must be a professor at FH Aachen. This person does not necessarily have to be a professor of the Faculty of Medical Engineering and Technomathematics. The first examiner is often the same person as the first examiner for the seminar paper. The second examiner must hold at least the desired academic degree (Bachelor).

The topic of the Bachelor's thesis must be agreed with both examiners.

  2. Application for admission to the Bachelor's thesis
After agreeing on the topic of the Bachelor's thesis, submit a written application that you would like to write a Bachelor's thesis. ONLY submit the application if you fulfil the relevant requirements. Transfer the results of your module examinations, which you can obtain from the online student administration service (QIS), to the application form. Then submit the completed and signed application form to the Examinations Office on the Jülich campus.

The Examinations Office will check your details and grant or deny admission. If your application is approved and admission is granted, you will receive your routing slip for the Bachelor's thesis.

Note: Depending on the place of study, there is usually a collection date at the beginning of the summer semester / 6th semester of the degree programme at the place of study, at which you will receive the routing slip for the Bachelor's thesis. You can ONLY take part in the collection date after you have successfully submitted your application. Please send the completed and signed application form as a pdf document to the Examinations Office at the Jülich campus(pruefungsamt.juelichfh-aachen.de).

  3. Completing the Bachelor's thesis/ preparing the written thesis
You and your two examiners will determine the final topic of the Bachelor's thesis on the Bachelor's thesis routing slip.

The processing time for the Bachelor's thesis is regulated in the Examination Regulations and will be entered in your Bachelor's thesis routing slip by the responsible Chairman of the Examination Board. Please make an appointment for this in good time.

The cover sheet of the written thesis must contain the FH Aachen logo and other information (including a declaration of independence), which is noted on the routing slip. One copy of the written thesis must be submitted in bound form (glue or ring binding) - loose-leaf binders or similar will not be accepted.

The written thesis (a printed copy with a signed declaration of independence) must be submitted in person to the Examinations Office at the Jülich campus; this is the "official" version of the Bachelor's thesis that will be assessed. Usually, both examiners will also receive a copy after completion. You will therefore prepare and submit at least 3 copies.

The timely submission of the Bachelor's thesis is confirmed on the routing slip in the Examinations Office. Ideally, you will have already completed the rest of the routing slip at the time of submission, i.e. applied for admission to the colloquium. This requires the signatures of both your examiners (at least 'sufficient') and the planning of the colloquium. If the routing slip already contains all this information and signatures when you hand it in, the routing slip will remain in the examination secretariat/office. Otherwise, you must take the routing slip with you again and complete it. Please note the opening hours of the Examination Secretariat/Office when submitting the routing slip.

  4. Carrying out the colloquium
The colloquium should take place within two months of submitting the written version of the Bachelor's thesis and is carried out by your two examiners. The agreed date of the colloquium was previously entered on the Bachelor's thesis routing slip. Before the actual colloquium, there is usually a (public) presentation on the Bachelor's thesis. The subsequent colloquium is an oral examination lasting a maximum of 60 minutes, in which the two examiners ask questions about the Bachelor's thesis itself and related topics. The answers are recorded in writing. After the colloquium, the examiners will discuss the grades and inform you of the grades for the written thesis and for the colloquium.

Note: When planning, please ensure that you re-register in good time for the coming semester if necessary. For example, if the colloquium is held at the beginning of September, you must be re-registered for the winter semester.

  5. Deregistration
After successfully passing the Bachelor's examination, you can be deregistered. You will receive a routing slip for this after the colloquium. Deregistration takes place either directly on request or automatically at the next semester change. If the colloquium is successfully completed within the first 2 weeks of the following semester, the semester fee can be refunded.

  6. Invitation to the graduation ceremony
After successfully completing your studies, you will receive an invitation to the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Medical Engineering and Technomathematics. You will receive your Bachelor's certificate at the ceremony. However, you can receive a confirmation of graduation including a transcript of records shortly after successfully completing your Bachelor's degree. Please contact the Examinations Office at the Jülich campus.
