Contents of the full-time Mechatronics program (B.Eng.)
In the first three semesters of the full-time program, you acquire the basic competencies in mathematics, science and engineering. Each module concludes with an examination. In the fourth to sixth semesters, compulsory modules impart in-depth knowledge of mechatronics and basic business knowledge. The module "General Competencies" serves to acquire important methodological competencies that go beyond the narrower field of engineering. General competencies can be acquired, for example, through tutoring activities or participation in important university committees.
Since engineers very often work in a project-oriented manner, two projects are an integral part of the program, which are carried out in teams of three to eight students. In the projects, you are familiarized with the basic elements of modern project management methods, presentation and communication techniques, and creativity techniques.
You learn to work independently on a new topic, to organize themselves in a group and to take responsibility for individual areas of the project.
In the elective area in the third to sixth semester, you can set an individual focus and specialize in a technical field. For example, in-depth knowledge can be acquired in control engineering, design engineering, numerical simulation of complex systems, manufacturing engineering and quality assurance, microelectronic and micromechanical components, and much more.
Study phases can be completed at foreign universities to gain language and intercultural competence and to signal mobility.
The seventh semester includes the practical project and the bachelor thesis with the final colloquium. During the first half of the semester, the practical project is to be carried out in an industrial company under the supervision of a professor. You perform engineering activities and document them in a final report.
The practical project emphasizes the industrial orientation of the course. Upon completion of the practical project and submission of the final report, you may be admitted to write your bachelor's thesis. The thesis is written autonomously by yourself, supervised by a professor and carried out to a very large extent in an industrial company. The thesis usually has a design-oriented, experimental or empirical focus. After completion of the bachelor thesis, the program concludes with a colloquium in which you report on the bachelor thesis in a presentation and face critical questions in a subsequent discussion to defend your bachelor thesis.
