Information for Teachers and Parents

Whether in the classroom, at parents' evenings or at information events - we support schools and parents in helping young people choose a degree programme.

The General Academic Counselling of FH Aachen offers lectures, workshops and materials on the topics of study orientation, the range of studies offered and the start of studies as part of the state project Kein Abschluss ohne Anschluss (KAoA) and beyond. In this way, we help to provide orientation and organise the transition from school to university in the best possible way.

Offers for parents

Parents are important guides when choosing a degree programme. The General Academic Counselling Service at FH Aachen informs parents about study options, application procedures and support services - so that you can accompany your child on the best possible path to university.

Parents' lecture "My child on the way to university - the role of parents and information about studying at FH Aachen and RWTH Aachen University"

On Wednesday, 14 October 2026, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Federal Employment Agency, in cooperation with FH Aachen and RWTH Aachen University , is offering an information event on the topic of "Study orientation and study decisions" explicitly for parents of sixth form students.

Parents who want to support their children in their decision to study often have to deal with many questions at the same time. In addition to discussions within the family about interests, inclinations and possible professions and careers, advertising, rumours and new regulations regarding the allocation of university places also have to be dealt with: Many things are just as new for parents as they are for prospective students. With the introduction of the Bachelor-Master system and the growing diversity of the range of studies offered, parents are usually only rudimentarily familiar. Schoolyard rumours and "hearsay" often replace the correct information and prevent young people from being able to assess and use their options properly.

Our joint lecture will answer many questions that are frequently asked in university student counselling sessions and provide information on the role of parents in the career choice process, information on the range of studies offered and admission at FH Aachen and RWTH Aachen University as well as other topics (e.g. financing studies, differences between FH and university, application, NC, etc.).

Date: Wednesday, 14 October 2026 from 7 to 8:30 pm
Location: Anne-Frank-Gymnasium, Aula - Schulzentrum Laurensberg, Hander Weg 89, 52072 Aachen
Target group: Parents of prospective students who would like to find out more about the topic of "study orientation" and the study opportunities at RWTH Aachen and/or FH Aachen.

Registration is possible via the RWTH website website.

Further information

As part of the state programme Kein Abschluss ohne Anschluss (KAoA) the General Academic Counselling of FH Aachen supports schools in study and career orientation. Initial information on the programme and the website Studienorientierung NRW can be found here:

What exactly is KAoA?

The state programme Kein Abschluss ohne Anschluss (KAoA) is a central instrument of education, youth and social policy in North Rhine-Westphalia. The aim is to provide all pupils with a well-structured and reliable transition from general school to university or vocational training. Individual measures are embedded in a comprehensive, systematic overall concept for career and study guidance.

KAoA pursues a preventative approach: pupils should be supported early on in their choice of studies and career - from initial orientation to practical insights into the world of work and a successful start to their studies or training.

To this end, standard elements have been developed that are firmly anchored in lessons. They systematically accompany pupils through secondary levels I and II. Here you will find short explanatory films on the standard elements.

In this standardised system, the universities primarily take on the task of study orientation and are therefore an important partner in the transition process.

Website Studienorientierung NRW

As part of the state programme Kein Abschluss ohne Anschluss (KAoA), the 32 state universities in NRW have jointly developed a central database for study orientation.
Teachers, parents and pupils can find suitable offers for study orientation across all universities here - simply, quickly and clearly.

The platform offers

  • comprehensive information about studying
  • Current counselling and orientation offers from the individual universities
  • Brief profiles of the individual universities including contact details for the student counselling centres

Your advantages:

  • All public universities regularly maintain and update their offers.
  • The offers are already assigned to the KAoA standard elements.
