ROS 2016

5th ROS Summer School 2016

Our 5th ROS Summer School took place at the Aachen UAS from 15th August - 26th August, 2016.

The ROS Summer School covered common topics regarding mobile robotics:

  • Introduction to Mobile Robotics
  • ROS File System
  • ROS Communication
  • Hardware and Sensors
  • ROSSerial and Teleoperation
  • Image Processing with OpenCV & ROS
  • Landmark Detection
  • Localization and Navigation
  • Mapping
  • Introduction to SLAM Algorithms
  • Participation at Urban Challenge Competition

We used the Middleware ROS (Robot Operating System) as standard Operating System for Robots. After having learnt the theory all topics were experienced on real hardware using our mobile robots developed at the Aachen UAS. In the end we had a competition where participants had to use their skills to program the robot to drive around a course.

Our Agenda for the 5. ROS Summer School, 15th-26th August, 2016:

  • Monday, August 15th: ROS-Demo / Show, welcome BBQ
  • Tuesday, August 16th: ROS Basics: Navigating in Linux and ROS, package creation and compilation
  • Wednesday,August 17th: ROS Basics: Publisher and subscriber, services, actions, teleoperation
  • Thursday, August 18th: Hardware interfaces, static and dynamic transforms
  • Friday, August 19th: Introduction to GAZEBO simulator, AR tag recognition
  • Saturday, August 20th: Day trip to Paris (France)
  • Sunday, August 21st: Day at leisure
  • Monday, August 22nd: Localization & mapping
  • Tuesday, August 23rd: Navigation, ROS control
  • Wednesday, August 24th: Industrial exhibition
  • Thursday, August 25th: Exam, free hacking
  • Friday, August 26th: Free hacking, competition, farewell BBQ

Additionally, we offered excursions during the week to explore Aachen and other nearby cities (e.g. Cologne, Maastricht, Bonn) and had a day trip to Paris on Saturday, August 20th.

Option: UAV Workshop

  • Saturday, August 27th: Basic principles of UAV design, components and functions, example setup of a multicopter, first flight setup guide
  • Sunday, August 28th: Flight modes, GPS based behaviours, Interfacing with ROS, AR_tags and UAVs, autonomous flying
