"Ich habe mich hier ausgesprochen wohl gefühlt, die Zusammenarbeit hat hervorragend geklappt", sagt Dr. Arevik Asatryan. Die 31-jährige Physikerin hat zwei Monate als Gastwissenschaftlerin am Institut für Nano- und Biotechnologien der FH Aachen (INB) verbracht. Dort forschte sie gemeinsam mit den Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern des Instituts an nanomodifizierten Oberflächen von Biosensoren, die beispielsweise zur späteren Glukosedetektion eingesetzt werden können.
Dr. Arevik Asatryan arbeitet als Teil eines neuformierten interdisziplinären Teams am A.B. Nalbandyan Institute of Chemical Physics der Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften Armeniens in Eriwan. "Wir wollen uns künftig stärker mit der Entwicklung und Charakterisierung von halbleiterbasierten Biosensoren beschäftigen", erläutert sie – eines der Arbeitsfelder des INB. Der wissenschaftliche Austausch mit den Kolleginnen und Kollegen am Campus Jülich habe ihr wichtige Impulse für ihre zukünftigen Experimente gebracht, zudem habe sie wertvolle Erkenntnisse über Labororganisation und Messmethoden gewonnen. "Ich bin sofort in die Forschungsarbeit am Institut integriert worden", sagt sie.
Der Direktor des INB, Prof. Dr. Michael J. Schöning, freut sich über die Zusammenarbeit: "Dr. Arevik Asatryan und ihre Kolleginnen und Kollegen haben in den letzten Jahren eine Expertise im Bereich der Modellierung von Biomolekülen aufgebaut, von der wir sehr profitieren können, also eine win-win-Situation für beide Seiten." Eine Intensivierung der Kooperation wird angestrebt: Im Wintersemester wird eine Doktorandin aus Eriwan für sechs Monate am INB forschen, auch ein weiterer Gastaufenthalt von Dr. Asatryan ist geplant.
Die 31-Jährige hat ihr Gastland als sehr offen kennengelernt: "Ich habe viele nette und hilfsbereite Menschen getroffen." Gemeinsam mit ihrem zweijährigen Kind und ihrer Nichte wohnte sie in Welldorf, einem Stadtteil von Jülich. In ihrer Freizeit besuchte sie die umliegenden Städte Aachen, Köln, Düsseldorf, Antwerpen und Maastricht.

Armenian Visiting Scientist Researches at the INB
"I felt very much at home here, the teamwork was outstanding," says Dr Arevik Asatryan. The 31-year-old physicist spent two months as a visiting scientist at the Institute of Nano- and Biotechnologies (INB) at FH Aachen. Together with the institute's scientists, she researched nano-modified surfaces of biosensors that can be used, among other things, for the subsequent detection of glucose.
Dr Arevik Asatryan works as a member of a newly formed interdisciplinary team at the A.B. Nalbandyan Institute of Chemical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia in Yerevan. "Going forward, we want to focus more on the development and characterisation of semiconductor-based biosensors," she explains - one of the INB's fields of work. The scientific exchange with her colleagues at the Jülich campus has provided her with important impulses for her future experiments, she says, adding that she has also gained valuable insights into laboratory organisation and measurement methods. "I was integrated into the research work at the institute right away," she says.
The director of the INB, Prof. Dr. Michael J. Schöning, is delighted about the cooperation: "In recent years, Dr. Arevik Asatryan and her colleagues have built up expertise in the field of biomolecule modelling, which we can benefit from greatly, so it's a win-win situation for both sides." Efforts are being made to intensify the cooperation: In the winter semester, a doctoral student from Yerevan will conduct research at the INB for six months, and another guest stay by Dr Asatryan is also in the works.
The 31-year-old has come to know her host country as being very open: "I've met many kind and helpful people." Together with her two-year-old child and her niece, she lived in Welldorf, a neighbourhood of Jülich. In her free time, she visited the surrounding cities, namely Aachen, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Antwerp and Maastricht.
