Sustainable Chemistry

The chemical education of students in the context of sustainable issues takes place in the Sustainable Chemistry Laboratory in an interdisciplinary approach. For example, renewable raw materials are isolated and extensively characterised analytically. This is followed by their conversion and derivatisation using sustainable processes and new methods. We use microwaves, ultrasound and light or pressure for this purpose. We also deal with sustainable solvent concepts, solvent-free reactions (or mechanochemistry) or the use of catalysts. In this context, polymer products are also synthesised and tested for their properties. The aim of the training is to critically question the classical ways of chemistry in every point of its value chain, to find more sustainable approaches, to assess them and ultimately to generate innovations in this way. On the research side, the Sustainable Chemistry Laboratory is integrated into the activities of the IAP.
