In the middle of your study programme

Practical projects during studies

In the course of your studies you have to complete various projects, which - depending on the chosen course of studies - vary. Information about these projects can be found on the Student Projects page.

Study problems

Problems are as different as we are. If they are too much fr you, then your first thought should not be to give up, but to tackle them. A good first point of contact is the Faculty8's student council, as it consists of students who perhaps have had to go through very similar troubles with their studies. They are always happy to help you.

If you have questions concerning the course of your studies, go to an academic advisor of the faculty 8. You find them listet on the page Service Centers, together with more contacts for further help or counseling.

General competencies

Except for Engineering Management (B.Sc.), all Bachelor's degree programs of Faculty 8 include the module "General Competencies". This is not a taught lecture, but rather a module with a practical orientation: Students acquire the credits e.g. through a semester abroad, through tutoring activities (Ersti tutors, subject tutors, or pro8 tutors), through language courses or participation in unpaid FH committees. How this is regulated exactly, can be found in your examination regulations. If you have read them and still have questions about this module, it is best to contact the chair of the examination board via e-mail: [email protected].

Choice of specialization (in Mechanical Engineering)

Students in the bachelor's program Mechanical Engineering have to choose one of the six specializations by the 4th semester (full-time program) or 6th semester (part-time program). Thus, they can set a focus on new technologies:

  • General Mechanical Engineering
  • Product development and production
  • Additive manufacturing
  • Production management and digitalization
  • Robotics
  • Product development and design

Each specialization is characterized by four compulsory elective modules and two arbitrary elective modules with a total of 36 credit points (LP). The specializations are clearly defined by the choice of elective modules. In other words, if you choose a specialization, then you must take the 4 compulsory elective modules that this specialization contains. A notification or special registration of the specialization (e.g. in QIS or at the examination office) is not necessary as your registration for the examinations in the elective modules shows which specialization you have chosen.

In addition to these 4 compulsory elective modules, 2 arbitrary elective modules must also be completed. For these two arbitrary elective modules, the examination regulations contain six elective module recommendations for each specialization. However, students can choose from the entire elective module catalog for the two arbitrary elective modules, consisting of the compulsory elective modules and elective module recommendations of all specializations. In other words: You may choose and take two from the 6 elective module recommendations available for your chosen specialization OR you may choose two modules from another specialization OR one elective module from two specializations...

Study abroad

The FH Aachen UAS has many partner universities abroad. Go international and study or work abroad! Intercultural competence is important because engineers are increasingly working in international teams. More information on the topic can be found on the page "Semester abroad".

Certificates

Just as the certificates you need during your studies are different, there are also different places where you can get them. Here are the most important three mentioned and which certificates are available there:

1.) The FH Aachen Portal

The FH Aachen Portal is available on the internet at h1.fh-aachen.de. In the portal you can get certificates about

  • Studienbescheinigung (proof that you are studying at the FH Aachen)
  • BAfÖG standard certificate according to §9 (about the period of study, no proof of achievements)
  • Certificate about the paid semester fee (also overview about the already paid semester fees)

In the portal you can also apply for

  • Refunds
  • Leave of absence (vacation semester)
  • Exmatriculation
  • Change of study program

2) QIS - the FH Aachen's Online Examination Administration

The online examination administration QIS of the FH Aachen is available on the internet at qis.fh-aachen.de. Via QIS you can not only register for and deregister from exams, but also obtain the following certificates:

  • Grade report
  • Average grade

3) The Examination Office of FB8

The following certificates can be obtained from the Faculty 8's Examination Office:

  • Transcripts of records in German and English language
  • BAföG certificates (transcript of study acchievements)
  • Certificates about the expected end of studies
  • Clearance certificate (certificate for change of place of study that there are no definitively failed examinations)
  • Provisional certificate of successful completion of studies
  • Final graduation certificates (see below)
  • The issuance of further certificates may also take place if necessary.

The graduation certificates (Zeugnis + Urkunde) will be issued after completion of studies and after the examination results of the thesis and the colloquium have been forwarded by the supervisor to the Examination Office, usually within six weeks without further application. As soon as the documents are available, a notification will be sent by e-mail. The documents can either be picked up at the Examination Office or sent by mail.

If you need a certificate, please write an email to pruefungsamt.maschbau(at)fh-aachen.de with your matriculation number and mention the certificate you need. If the certificate you need is not listed here, please also write an email and it will be checked if the certificate can be issued.
