KI@FHAachen

We want to encourage and enable people to use artificial intelligence responsibly for their education, their profession and for the benefit of society.

We make artificial intelligence accessible and practically usable for our everyday university life. Discover how AI enriches our education and working world! The biggest risk is not AI, but not using AI. There are a few things to bear in mind and learn.

Please note that AI is referred to as "KI" in German, which is a literal translation of the English term

Our Understanding of AI

We motivate our staff to actively use the opportunities offered by digitalisation. Curiosity and a tolerance for mistakes are important attributes here.

Prof Dr Christof Schelthoff

Excerpt from the FH Aachen Strategy, 2025

"We take part in AI because it makes our work easier. Minutes, research, programming, speeches, summaries - and many other things that we can't yet imagine. We can become more efficient in administration, revolutionise learning and accelerate research.

But we know that we also have a responsibility to ethics, data protection and sustainability. That's why we need regulations - not to hinder but to sensitise us to the risks. The danger of AI providing false information, of us thoughtlessly wasting computing capacity/resources and that our data is a valuable asset must be recognised throughout the university."

Prof Dr Christof Schelthoff
Vice Rector Strategic Planning and IT

FAQ

What Is the FH-Chatbot?

The FH Chatbot is a user interface for using the Large Language Model ChatGPT at the FH Aachen. The service is operated by DVZ. Based on an API interface, you can send requests to ChatGPT - free of charge and in compliance with data protection regulations.

Various models such as GPT-5 and others can be selected.

The FH-Chatbot can analyse and understand texts, answer questions, write texts and hold human-like conversations. In the conversation area, a chat is available in which you can have any question or task answered.

Who Is the FH-Chatbot For?

The FH Aachen chatbot is available to all members and students of FH Aachen. The rollout will be implemented in stages across the entire university (first university members, then students).

How Do I Get Access to the Service?

Login https://chat.kiconnect.nrw

To log in, select FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences as your institution and log in with your FH ID and password.

Prerequisite for Use

Basic AI skills are required to use the AI services at FH Aachen. To ensure safe and effective use, participation in one of the following free training courses is required:

For lecturers https://ki-campus.org/courses/ki_fuer_lehrende

For employees in the administration https://ki-campus.org/ki-hochschulverwaltung

The terms and conditions of use stored in the FH Chatbot apply to responsible and data protection-compliant use.

What do I need to be aware of when using it?

The content generated by the FH Chatbot may contain errors, be distorted or even discriminatory. It should therefore always be checked against trustworthy sources. It is important that all users acquire the necessary skills in dealing with the language model and are aware of the limitations of chatbots.

The ability to generate high-quality texts also raises questions regarding scientific working methods and copyright. In terms of good scientific practice, it must be disclosed whether and in what way AI was used.

Data protection aspects must also be taken into account when using the FH chatbot. No personal data is processed via the central API interface. As a general rule, you should refrain from entering sensitive, personal or copyrighted information when using the FH Chatbot.

Is my data secure?

Your data is not collected through the centralised use of the OpenAI API. OpenAI's terms of use stipulate that (bundled) requests via the API are stored for 30 days. This data is not analysed or used to improve OpenAI's LLM (Large Language Model) and is deleted after 30 days. This represents a major advantage over the direct personal use of ChatGPT. In principle, however, sensitive, personal and copyright-protected data should not be entered when using the GPT Lab.

Why Should I Use the FH-Chatbot Rather Than My Own Private One?
