FAQ

Questions about General Regulations

When and how can I apply for the degree programme?

You can apply via the online Application Portal. The portal will be opened 4 weeks before the application deadline for international applicants (see Applicatioan and Admission).

Is it possible to postpone registration by one semester?

No, that is not possible. If you do not register upon successful admission, you will have to apply again in the following semester.

Are there any tuition fees? If so, how much?

We do not have tuition fees. Students only have to pay a so-called social contribution per semester, which includes insurance and public transport fees. You can find more information about this on the Semester Fee page.

When will I be notified of the result of my application?

Admission results are announced approximately four weeks after the application deadline for international students (around 31 December or 30 June). The results for European applicants are announced approximately four weeks after the later deadline (around 15 February or 15 August).

Questions about Language Skills

What is the institution code for IELTS/GRE?

We no longer have an ETS code. Please upload your GRE certificate to your online application and present your language certificates at registration.

When do I have to submit the language certificates?

The language certificates are not strictly required for the application. However, in order to be admitted to the degree programme, you must submit them on the day of your registration.
Please note that failure to submit the certificates by the registration deadline will not affect your application as such, but you will forfeit your admission.

Is it possible to take a German language course while studying for a Master's degree and submit the certificate later?

No, that is not possible. Without the language certificates required at the time of registration, your admission will be null and void. There is no possibility to get a conditional admission. We do not offer special language courses in preparation for the B1 examination.

Which language certificates are sufficient?

For English language skills, we accept TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge or FCE certificates with the required scores indicated on the Application and Admission page. In addition, we accept the "Admission Exam English" from spraachen.org.

For the German language, we accept the B1 Certificate of the Goethe Institute or the TestDaf Certificate. All other certificates must be checked in advance by our office. A German language certificate A2 is sufficient for registration, but only the institutions mentioned above can be accepted without further proof.

As a native speaker of English, do I have to submit proof of English language skills?

You do not need to submit TOEFL/IELTS/FCE certificates if you are a native speaker or if you can provide an official statement from your previous university that your entire undergraduate studies were taught in English.

Are all courses and seminars held in English?

The subject modules are taught in English. However, there is a GC module ("Technisches Deutsch") with German-language content.

Questions about Documents and Recognition

Which documents do I have to submit?

By the application deadline, you must submit the following documents: Curriculum vitae in tabular form, Bachelor's certificate, transcripts, GRE (for applicants from non-Bologna universities), course comparison list, module descriptions.
You do not need to upload a personal statement of motivation or a letter of recommendation.
During registration, you must submit your Bachelor's certificate, your GRE score card, your letter of admission, the language certificates and the additional documents requested in the letter of admission.

Do I need to have my documents certified by the German embassy?

No, you don't. If your original documents are in English or in German, all you need to do is upload a scan of the originals. If your documents are in another language, they must be translated into one of the required languages and be certified by your university or a notary.

Is it possible to apply without a Bachelor's degree (as long as it has almost been completed)?

Yes. it's possible. If you finish your undergraduate studies before starting our Master's degree programmes, you can apply with a provisional degree from your university. It must state that you will complete your studies and should include a provisional numerical overall grade. In this case, we can only consider the courses indicated on the transcripts you provided for the course comparison list.

What is the institution code for IELTS/GRE?

We no longer have an ETS code. Please upload your GRE score card to your online application.

How to submit the documents for the application?

Please upload all required documents to your online application. Do not send any documents by post or via ETS.

Do I need a letter of recommendation?

No, these will not be considered.

What are "module descriptions"?

Please upload the description for all modules you named in the course comparison list as a single document to the online application. Please do not upload your entire syllabus. If you upload the entire syllabus, the application will become null and void.

Do I need the GRE?

The GRE must be provided if you have completed your undergraduate studies at a higher education institution that is not a member of the Bologna Process. A list of Bologna Process conforming institutions can be found on the EHEA page. Please note that the GRE score is stated in percentile and, still, in percentage.

Do I need an APS certificate?

If you have completed your undergraduate studies in China, India or Vietnam, you will need to present an APS certificate during the visa process.
