Ophthalmic Optics and Optometry B.Sc.

Study your Dream Job - Extra-Occupationally or Full-Time

Ophthalmic optics and optometry continues to be a classic occupation requiring formal training in Germany. Most of the more than 7,200 trainees in the optician's trade in Germany each year have so far been learning their profession in a dual system in optician's businesses and at vocational schools.

In order to advance the so far not very widespread academisation of the profession in NRW, FH Aachen with its Faculty of Medical Technology and Technomathematics along with the Bildungszentrum des Zentralverbandes der Augenoptiker (ZVA-BZ), the master school of the Zentralverband der Augenoptiker:innen und Optometrist:innen (Central Association of Opticians and Optometrists), have joined forces for cooperation. The advantages are huge: with a university certificate under your belt, it is much easier to move up the career ladder. Also, there are no more obstacles when changing to a job abroad, because in many countries a university degree is customary and, as such, a standard prerequisite for applicants. Research, however, is of particular importance: only those who have trained in scientific work at university can conduct sound research work. In optometry, this is increasingly in demand.
As a result, FH Aachen has been offering the dual study programme in Ophthalmic Optics and Optometry (extra-occupational) since the winter semester 2016/17.

Combine your job and your studies: Work as an optician or optometrist while simultaneously earning a Bachelor of Science degree!

A considerable advantage compared to other optometry courses offered is that students can expand and improve their professional practice during the entire period of study. A reduction of about 30% from a full time position is already sufficient for this. For about 12-14 weeks per academic year, divided into three blocks of about 4 weeks each, they participate in attendance courses, mostly in Knechtsteden. The remaining 9 months consist of in-depth e-learning and practical work in the company.

As lateral entrants, master opticians can almost cut their study time in half, provided they meet the respective requirements (see FAQ).
