About the Degree Programme

The Master Information Systems (M.Sc.)

As part of the consecutive Master's degree course in Information Systems, students acquire in-depth knowledge and skills in the field of business informatics after completing their first professional qualification.

The Information Systems degree course is characterised by its international orientation and its flexible range of elective modules, with a focus on acquiring skills for a dynamic and sustainable digital transformation. In addition to an English-language foundation course, students can choose elective modules in English and German from various specialisations (International Business and Management, Information Systems Engineering, Data Science and Digital Business).

The programme is designed in such a way that students can complete it entirely in English.

Our concept promotes an inclusive learning environment for students from many different countries, prepares our students for global challenges and enables personal and professional development.

The programme is application- and research-oriented and is aimed at above-average graduates of Bachelor's programmes with an information technology and business focus, such as Information Systems, Computer Science, Digital Business and Business Studies.

"Anyone who has completed a WI Master's degree in Aachen knows how important dynamic skills are for digital transformation and can implement them."

This guiding principle and our vision of a modern Master's degree programme in Information Systems result in the following learning objectives for the Information Systems (M.Sc.) degree programme:

  • Graduates develop and expand dynamic competencies (especially in the design and use of information systems) of companies in the context of digital transformation.
  • Graduates are able to analyse, evaluate and change the information system and process landscape of companies from an economic and technological perspective.
  • Graduates shape the digital transformation process in intercultural and interdisciplinary teams as a specialist or manager.
  • Graduates analyse, evaluate and communicate the practical implications of digital transformation for companies and society, particularly with regard to sustainable management.
  • Graduates apply scientific methods to develop evidence-based new findings and apply them in a design-oriented manner.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is the Master's program offered full-time or part-time?

The Master's degree program is offered both full-time and part-time. It is important to note that part-time is not the same as part-time. While part-time study usually involves a reduced number of courses per semester, part-time study is specifically designed to be completed alongside a professional activity and often offers more flexible time models and evening or weekend courses.

Part-time students need an employer who can offer you flexible working hours and support you accordingly.

Is the Information Systems degree program also offered online?

No, the Information Systems degree program generally takes place on campus. However, individual modules may deviate from this. Attendance is generally not compulsory for lectures and tutorials, whereas attendance is compulsory for internships during the semester.

Please contact your module coordinator in advance to find out the exact compulsory dates for the module in question.

Can the Master's in Information Systems be studied entirely in English?

Yes, the Master's degree course in Information Systems can be studied entirely in English. The course places particular emphasis on internationality, which is why the foundation course is taught entirely in English. In the compulsory elective area, students have the opportunity to choose modules in both German and English, which increases flexibility and options for students.

How does the crediting of examinations from another Master's degree program work?

The transfer of credits from another Master's degree program is not carried out via the Student Advisory Service, but via the Examinations Office of Faculty 5 and directly via the respective professors or module coordinators. The process for transferring credits and the necessary forms can be found on the website of the Examinations Office in the section Information for university transfer students (Please note that the forms of the Examination Office are only available in German).
Please inform yourself there about the exact steps and documents to be submitted. Whether an examination achievement can be recognized is checked individually. The Student Advisory Service has no influence on this. We therefore recommend that you contact the module coordinators at an early stage and have all relevant documents ready. This includes Certificates or transcripts of records and the respective module description from the previous university.

Visa for international applicants/students

Please remember to apply for your visa early. Processing can take several weeks or even months. A place at FH Aachen does not automatically mean you will be granted a visa; being awarded a place does not entitle you to a visa. Visas are only issued after review by the relevant authorities and require that all (legal) requirements are met.

In some cases, the visa authority requires certain certificates or evidence. For this, please contact: info.information.systemsfh-aachen.de or the Student Management Office.

Contact points for international students

On the website of FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences or the International Office, you will find specific information for international students—particularly on the topics of registration and residence permits.

Late arrival, e.g., due to delays in visa issuance

Provided you have submitted all the necessary documents on time and paid the semester fees, you can be officially enrolled by the Student Management Office. In this case, you will retain your place at the university regardless of your visa or arrival date in Aachen. Late arrival is therefore not a problem from a formal point of view. However, please note that a late arrival can mean significant restrictions during the first semester and beyond. In particular, we would like to draw your attention to the following points:

1. Teaching formats: FH Aachen is a face-to-face university and does not generally offer online participation in lectures, internships, or exercises. The teaching formats are determined by the respective module coordinators. Content that you miss due to late arrival must be made up independently. Individual online offerings do not justify a general claim to digital participation in other modules.

2. Modules with compulsory attendance: In modules or practical courses with compulsory attendance, there is no entitlement to subsequent participation. Please note that passing practical courses is often a prerequisite for admission to the module examination. Substitute performances are generally not possible.

3. Interdisciplinary projects and scientific seminars: There is no entitlement to participate in interdisciplinary projects or scientific seminars if you arrive after the project or seminar has already begun.

4. Missed content and deadlines: Missed content or registrations for courses after the deadline must be made up on your own responsibility. Please contact the respective module coordinator in good time.
